SAMSUNG TV switches itself off and then on again

  • Call Samsung. The call centre knows what they are talking about and will have come across this problem before. They can provide firmware updates to the tv's and that may fix the problem. If not, they will be able to provide you with details of a local repair centre and may even be able to cover part of the cost, like the cost of the parts.

This turning on and off whilst watching seems to result in not turning on at all - just clicking on and off on standby.

If you google 'Samsung turning on and off on standby' there's heaps of sites/posts/complaints. The same happened to my 40" Samsung last month (bought in 2008). I telephoned Samsung direct, explained the problem and they sent out an engineer FOC. If you think this is the same problem as you're experiencing give Samsung a call. Samsung are aware of this fault and are repairing FOC or replacing the TV with a new one.

Don't worry about warranties/SOGA etc. When you phone Samsung (0845 7267 864) just have your model number and serial number to hand.
  • I think johannab's problem is different, but the specific one you mention is here - look

hello ,thanks everyone. I rang Samsung this morning and as soon as we established it was more than a year old he said he couldn't help and gave me the number of an approved samsung repair shop. At one point during the call he talked about resetting the tv to factory settings but then was informed by a colleague that this would not solve the problem.

I then rang the approved samsung repair shop (in Brentwood) and they said it would be £105 + vat to inspect it on site or £45 if i take it in. All labour and parts would be additional cost.

Really not interested in paying this kind of money, but don't know what else to do now.

I will try covering the remote sensor and see if that helps ...maybe something is interfering with it.

Where is the sensor on the tv located? I can't see it ,and don't know what am looking for.

Richie-from-the-boro , thanks lol, I was thinking about trying to get rid of it as faulty on ebay . Then we would buy a brand new 40" for under £400 from comet or argos and at least have maybe a hundred towards it.

Brodev - thats a great article. I wish I had his resolve.

I may get back onto Amazon saying their response was not adequate etc and Samsung are unable to help ,and then take it from there.

This doesn't seem up to the usual samsung customer care service, send them an email saying you are disapointed with the reaction you got after hearing praise from others, it may work.

    - faulty power board / safety shut off / the dreaded hidden touch buttons on the front / corrupted EEPROM / dysfunctional update system, the list is endless without seeing & diagnosing the problem.

    - the dreaded hidden touch buttons on the front switching things as the cabinet heats and expands is a good possibility and Samsung know [ but deny ] all about it.

Just an update in case anyone else is experiencing problems with Samsung.
I called Samsung due to my TV (bought in January 2008 - out of warranty) switching on and off on standby.
They sent a engineer out FOC.
Engineer couldn't fix it so sent his report in.
Samsung called and offered me a 'goodwill gesture of £250'.
    I declined the 'offer'.
Next day Samsung called back and 'after speaking to their manager' are now delivering a brand new TV FOC.
