Cambridge secrets?

Worth pointing out that Camb. Univ. students get 50p single-fare bus travel on all Citi buses until the end of June - it's a trial, so may not continue if it's not used enough.
Otherwise Mill Road is pretty much the only place for everyday shopping now, or else the barns on Newmarket Road. There's a cheap-Chinese-tat shop (plastic everything) on Mill Road, and two cheap furniture shops (one the Salvation Army, the other tucked away behind the Cambridge Building Society).
The market is good for fruit & veg - I recommend the stalls opposite M&S, not Coe's (the big stall on the Guildhall end, where you always find a mouldy one at the bottom of the bag). Staples at Mitcham's Corner is OK for stationery. Chris' Bikes in Thornton Way, Girton is probably the best bike shop, and the prices are reasonable. Some of the charity shops on Burleigh St aren't too expensive.
Anglia Ruskin University do free eyetests if you let the students practice on you.
I could cite at least a dozen cheap shops that have closed in the last ten years. These days I do most of my shopping in Ely
(The Market Square cinema is also no longer with us, now being one of four branches of M&S)0 -

Aldi is way closer than Asda. And way cheaper. Go to top of Castle Hill (hey it's the only hill in town, enjoy it), turn right on Histon Rd appx 400m on L by Esso garage. Its ok to walk let alone cycle.
Even better stop at Nasreen Dar at the beginning of Histon Rd for the most amazing worldwide deli selection (and sealing wax and DVD-RWs and toys and...) A Cambridge institution for around 30years now.
In summer cycle out to Coton village and buy the fresh produce dead cheap at peoples garden gates.

Just a quick one on Local Secrets - I tried to use one of their offers just before Christmas, for money off a meal if I took a large group. The restaurant refused to honour when it came to paying as they said that they had been so messed around by the site that they had repeatedly asked for the offer to be withdrawn. LS are still headlining the same offer in their newsletter, and have not responded to a mail that I sent asking why this was the case. Moral of the story is, check with the outlet before you go! Couldn't think of a 'unique' username0

I used to be a student at Anglia Poly Uni, living opposite the laundrette on Mill Road (over the bridge..).
Last time I went to Cambridge I found the place had changed a lot since I was resident. The 'loss' of that dept store that's now Borders/Starbucks etc etc has IMO made it a lot better. The expansion of the shopping centre over by Burleigh St has mixed effects. Ok theres a lot more choice for the gentry than the graffitti covered shops there used to be.
Oh how much guff was there about McDonalds going into that spot just off the marketplace. How cheap does the interior look? 'original' palladian features, yeh?
Theres still the big Sally Army place on Mill Rd, apart from the pubs, and the occasional fast food place, it must be one of the few shops that hasn't 'gone Cambridge' since I left.
Part of me would love to go back, but I'd be worried about being bored outside of term/summer holiday time. Plus the cost.
Anyone know the lottery numbers this week?0 -
Go to Tesco Newmarket Road or Asda nearby in Coldhams Lane/Beehive Centre after 7pm or even 8pm weekdays and near closing time on Sundays (Tesco closes at 5pm, Asda closes at 4pm) and you will get reduced food so don't say Cambridge is expensive! Also, the coop shops are good as after 8pm they reduce the last reductions (display by today) to 10p each or very low.0

Yes it's true!!!
To get a voucher for a free swim, go to the VUE cinema in the Grafton Centre and pick up the free magazine in the lobby. Inside, you'll find a voucher for a free swim. The staff will happily accept one for each person.
These were printed several times over the last couple of years and have always been accepted. No conditions apart from the expiry date.
Please enjoy and don't be too greedy, only take as many of the magazines as you'll use.
PS My favourite Freebie in Cambridge just has to be the Fitzwilliam Museum.0 -
