Have you tried Daily Bread (https://www.dailybread.co.uk)? It's a little bit out of town just off the Kings Hedges road. It's a non-profit food co-operative, anyone can shop there. It sells alot of fairtrade and organic stuff, which isn't cheap, but you can buy all sorts in bulk (flour, muesli, cereals, pulses etc).
You could maybe car share with someone to get out there and call into Aldi on Histon Road on the way. You'd save a fortune!
I moved here from Bradford a year ago and am still getting over how difficult it is to find cheap shops - I only buy clothes when I go back home to my mum's and don't talk to me about hairdressers!!0 -
 This thread is bringing a lump to my throat. I was born & bred in Cambridge and moved away in 1993 up to Peterborough (long story) and I miss it terribly. I would love to move back but just can't afford it.
Yes it is expensive but...being in the cheaper end of the county...all I can say is you get what you pay for
I'd love to move back even if it meant paying more for my beans.....Bank Balance: In the black for the moment.

I have lived in Cambridge all my life and no there are not many bargains to be had. The cheapest place to buy most things is the car boot sale at Cowley Road on a sunday morning. The fruit and veg man is very cheap but you have to watch what he gives you. There is also a stall which sells tins and buscuits and things quite cheap which is worth a look. There is also another car boot at Milton Road football ground which has a cheap fruit and veg stall. His seems to be a bit better but the resto of the car boot is rubbish.
If you do decide to get a bike the local police sell off all the stolen bikes which have not been claimed periodically. Very cheap. It is advertised in the local paper.
The best place for groceries is Aldi but I find you cant buy every thing there so I also go to Tesco in Cherryhinton to top up. There are several Tescos and I think they run buses to them. Not free though.
Ely Farmers market (every 2nd and 4th Saturday) is very good ( not cheap though) and the shops in Ely are cheaper than Cambridge. The train station is right near Tescos.
The nearest Lidl is in St Neots which also has a very good market on a Thursday if you can get to it.
The park and ride is the cheapest way to get into town or the hospital (you dont have to have a car) and there is a free bus to the Graton Centre from Emmual St.
I love Cambridge but fear I may have to move out soon as I am due to retire and will not be able to afford to live here0 -
Good cheap buys at the new Korean Supermarket on Mill Road. Though Cho-Mee Oriental grocers has loads of cheap veg, sauces, etc. It's also on Mill Road. The Hope Street Antiques yard off of Mill Road (close to the Co-op) has loads of very cheap antiques.0

saraht wrote:At least Cambridge has a big Wetherspoons pub, the Regal is great as you can get brilliant deals on drinks and good value meal deals too.
Was even better value when it was a cinema. With student cards you could get two entries and a big bucket of popcorn for under a fiver! (and all this were nowt but fields...)
I miss Cambridge (used to work at the University Arms hotel on Parkers Piece and lived just off Mill Road)hey there's no money but we couldn't be happier if we tried

I remember that cinema...it was the ABC! You used to queue around the corner down that alley by Blue Arrow Employment Agency if I remember correctly.
The cinema in the Market Square called "The Victoria" - I wonder if that is still there!? I used to go there on a Saturday morning with my brother to The Minors.Bank Balance: In the black for the moment.

I live near St. Ives about 8 miles N of Cambridge and about 12 miles N of Cambridge is Huntingdon.
St. Ives is Very pretty we have several quaint little independent shops a Budgens, Boots, a Woolies (Woolworth Cambridge now a HUGE Next) Peacocks, New Look, Mackays, Yours (cheap clothes for the larger lady) and a warehouse clearance shop.
St. Ives is only a little town but it has a big heart and cheapy shops galore! Market day is on a Monday and for breakfast B4 u shop or lunch after you can't beat The local cafe which is called "The Local Cafe" :rotfl: There are several excellent Hairdressers and an American nail bar where you can get your nails done as a treat for a fraction of the price in Cambridge.
Huntingdon is the best though a litle bigger than St. Ives; several independent gift type shops but lovely gifts for a fraction of the price you pay in Cambridge. Boots, Woolies, Mackays, Yours, New Look, Peacocks etc but also Wilkinsons (I LOVE that shop) "The Swag shop" which sells an unbelievable amount of tat but often has "posh shop" seconds/last seasons left overs you can get some great bargains there. Cheap shoe shop, old fashioned toy shop, lots of cheap cafe's and a Market and Farmers Market. Use Whippet coaches 1a or 5 from Cambridge bus station to get you to St. Ives or Huntingdon for the day and stock up on cheapies that you can't buy on the mean streets of Cambridge, I love Cambridge, I just can't afford it!! Happy shopping people!:D:hello:
