ipad being jailbroke? is that a good idea or not?

Options
basically im selling my iphone in my local paper for £300.

Ive just got an ipad and Ive had someone call and say he will offer me £250 and he'll jailbreak the ipad for me. He tells me that means free apps for life.

He owns a computer shop and tells me that he normally charges £45 to do that. My concern is I know nothing about it. By doing this would it void my warranty with apple? could it cause problems with my ipad? could i still use itunes as i like to listen to a lot of music and videos?

Im just concerned that my ipad cost £429 and its a lot of money if by doing this it knackers it up.

please help

personnally i would not accept because yes it will void your warrent 99% of the time and why should it not you would in all reality be setting your ipad up to steal from them (free apps for life means no money for Apple)

and the other one is yes it could quite easily turn your nice shiny new ipad in to a loverly looking paper weight if done wrong
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Jailbreaking is where you alter the software on the ipad in order to get by some of the crazy restrictions like no themes and no multi tasking and no folders. However, the apple update overcomes all of this thus i would not recommend it.

Yes you can get apps for free but this is illegal and if apple ever find out i can guarantee they will claim all of the money back.

Also, as it is only the software you change. For someone which is competent it is impossible to break it. as all they need to do is install the firmware on it again and it will be back to normal.

    Personally, dont do it.

A bit OT: Are you saying that you're using your iPad now for making calls? Reminds me on Happy Trigger TV :D

45 quid to jailbrak an iPad? People pay to jailbreak their iPad? I am definately in the wrong job. Personally I wouldn't and in fact haven't done it to my iphone. You will be in breach of warranty, yes you can still do all yor music and things just do not accept the auto firmware upgrade when it comes round via iTunes because you will be back to square 1.

So getting free apps from cydia (not the apple app store) is illegal then?

Indeed. Jailbreaking does allow you to get perfectly legitimate software that you can't get from Apple.

It also allows you to run pirated software from the App Store.

It also breaks your warranty so if your iPad breaks or dies, you will not have a leg to stand on.

    Horses for courses really.

No it isn't so long as they are not cracked apps, as for jailbreaking, yes as it is an unauthorised modification apple can and will void the warranty but in saying that so long as you can sync it you can cleanly restore it to factory conditions, mind you an accidental drop that smashes screen and inards can usually be fixed quicker via houshold insurance, as for jailbreaking, although apple don't like it, it has been deemed as not illegal. Now the original point of the post, tell him to go wistle, you can get the jailbreak software for free and is so easy to do even a politicial could do it.

I read another thread about this here - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2510243
There is a way of doing it as jmbms says.

Personally I would politely refuse and ask for the full £300. I have a jailbroken iphone, and jailbreaking is best done yourself, and is free to do. The information is out there, and him charging £45 to do something using free software is a total scam. Even if he says that he is providing a service to do it, he isnt - the jailbreak software is the property of the code writer and he cannot charge someone if he is using their software to perform a service.

If the software is licensed under the GPL, he's allowed to charge people for it. Even if not, he could provide the software for free but could charge for the service. Maybe the £45 includes some kind of guarantee and he buys an new one in case he "bricks" it.

There are people who are not able to jailbreak the iPad and whether the price is fair or not will be determined by the market...
