I'm just giving this a little bump :) Does anyone know if I could get software that would block calls AND texts compatible with any of the phones above?

i remember there being a thread about budgetting using software on a phone and someone had given some software name but cant remember the name. try manually searching all threads in the mobiles section over the last month. i tried the search feature but couldnt find it, so try the manual search if you are interested in it.

did a bit of searching and found a few options. dont know how they are but check these options out yourself.

Android can block calls from specific numbers, natively. All you have to do is add the unwanted caller’s number to your contacts, then open the profile for the number, press Menu, tap Options, and you'll see the Send to Voicemail option. Choose that option, and calls from this number won’t ring on your phone. http://www.tomsguide.com/us/pictures-story/160-12-Android-Smartphone-Tips-Tricks.html

i just verified if this option exists on my phone (HTC DESIRE) this option is there in the contacts page where i can set each contact individually to always go to voicemail if i wish. this is one easy option for you but you will still get the voicemail! which you can delete.

The iPhone for one does not need root access in order to have access to its hardware for accepting an incoming call signal. The app that was made to do this is called the Mcleaner application and thousands of people currently use it.

for android phones see http://www.androidfreeware.net/tag-block.html i have absolutely no idea how good these things are though.

you might want to try FY Receptionist ... not a perfect solution but does have black/white list and like 5 modes ....
see other stuff mentioned on this thread http://androidforums.com/support/6077-caller-id-based-blocking-call-forwarding.html

hope one of these options helps, but the native support in many android phones for automatic call forwarding looks promising and cheapest easiest option if you have an android phone that allows this option. please note that not all android phones might have this option.

android is an operating system for mobile devices http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_(operating_system). there are different systems available like the iphone, symbian, windows mobile etc.

by native, i mean the facility is available on the operating system without the need for downloading any other software.

call forwarding automatically to voicemail for certain numbers chosen by you is possible on phones like the HTC Desire among many others.

i am told there are other programs like visual voicemail that you can use to read the messages rather than listen to them, so that you can easily scroll through many messages at one go and delete the ones that you are not interested in. this might be useful if you get loads of voicemails on a day. i havent used that software and just happened to read about it. hope this helps.

The HD2 runs Windows Mobile Professional (aka PPC or Pocket PC), I use Callblock on mine. There are 2 versions of it, a totally free one which will block up to 5 numbers (including sms), for each number you can choose to either send calls to voicemail or simulate a pick up/hang up and for sms you can either accept, ignore or delete them automatically. It's available through MobiHand (you'll have to register) and I'm sure other app shops http://www.mobihand.com/product.asp?id=37125. The other version which is not free but allows a whole bunch of rules to be set up, including being able to vary profiles by times etc. http://www.mobihand.com/product.asp?id=19006

Edit: there's also one called Call Firewall

    That's fantastic information, thank you.

Anyone know anything about the Nokia models I mentioned? (He's after either N8 or N97) It's OH that needs it more than me :)

Sorry, I know nothing about Nokias at all. I forgot to say that if your choice is between the HD2 and the Desire, and as I think you don't have a big interest in tweaking and changing things on your phone much :p, then I'd probably suggest the Desire - I think Android handsets are likely to be more user-friendly out-of-the-box. Don't get me wrong, I love my HD2 and have had WinMo devices since 2005, but they are so much better after spending some time changing stuff in the registry, flashing custom ROMs and generally tweaking stuff until it's exactly how I want it. I'd also suggest if you haven't already, that you pop round a mobile phone shop and have a play with both and see which you prefer.

How did you guess? It's all very embarassing as I am a real life science geek but not in this area! I do like the look of the desire and I think I can get quite a good deal if I upgrade on O2.

Anyone else know about the Nokias?
