Software for blocking calls / texts question

Hello

Is there a decent piece of software out there to block certain numbers from calling and texting another mobile?

Can anyone provide info if they know of one and which phones support it - me and OH are both due to renew (one with Orange, one with O2) and are both interested in this.

Any info much appreciated!

I don't think you can block call or text coming to the handset.
There's s/w to blackball calls (so that an incoming number goes to answer phone or gets a message).
But you can't stop a text arriving at the phone, the network will always deliver it. There's no s/w that will 'talk' to the network server and stop them there.

Thanks for the reply - that's such a bummer! Someone had told me about 'Blacklist' (?) that Smart phones would support. Hmm.

Blacklist runs on Symbian (or used to) and is answer phone s/w which runs on the phone.

You just enter number you don't want to answer and they don't ring, the s/w catches them and either take a message or give a message and hangs up.

There may very well be a version that handles texts too, it could just delete them as they arrive I suppose?

Do you know much about it? I'm a bit clueless when it comes to phones tbh - what's Symbian? How is it installed and what type of phone do you need?

Symbian's the operating system of the phone. It was mainly on Nokia's.

I'd think the same software would be around for most smartphone's ??

Might be an idea to turn it around, what phones are you looking at or which do you like the look of ?

There is a program for symbian (ie Nokia) phones that "blocks" texts from numbers you choose. You install it and have to have it running permanently, which can be a pain, and I think you have to pay for the program after the trial period runs out. Can't remember what it's called, sorry!

A quick google shows this one for Android phones http://www.handcent.com/ that does texts.

    And this for Symbian http://www.penreader.com/s60-3rd-edition-software/Handy_Blacklist.html

OK, I have a bit more research to do then! I'm not massively bothered about my phone - nice to have a camera and I know a lot seem to have unlimted internet access which would be good. I'm on a pay monthly O2 contract and hoping to upgrade. Not that bothered about an iphone (my colleagues have generously bored me with theirs so many times I feel as though I already have one:p) although not completely opposed to them if one was available at a decent enough price.

OH (who really needs the blocking software - bonkers ex but doesn't want to change number as is business number) is on an Orange contract and has been with them a gazillion years so always seems to do very well out of upgrades and always wants the whistles and bells even though they never last the full length of his contract!

Thanks for the help - googling brings up a lot but lots of it looks useless.

If it is just one number that you are bothered about, then so long as you have proof of the harassment then you can report to the police about the harassment, they should do the needful and hopefully will deter future such unwanted texts or calls. Or you could always ask the police to get a restraining order if it is a serious problem.

Bubblesmoney - it's an idea we've thought through but he has a child to the daft bint so getting the police is a real last option (although she only has to overstep the mark once more for this to happen!). The number blocking is just an easy way of halting her contact.

OK - OH is looking at the Nokia N8 or N97 and I'm considering an HTC Desire or H2. Any thoughts on these? I've read through some review sites but anyone on here know anything about them and if they'd support one of the blocking programs (those that block texts and numbers would be perfect).
