Incredibly stupid question....

Options
I class myself as quite an intelligent person, but this has me stumped. Basically, I'm going out to Grenada at the end of summer and I've just got my flight confirmation through. These are the flight times:

Outbound Date: 25-08-2010
Outbound Route: London Gatwick (LGW) to Grenada (Caribbean)
Monarch Airlines MON 369
Outbound Departure Time: 09:25
Outbound Arrival Time: 13:25

Return Date: 01-09-2010
Return Route: Grenada (Caribbean) to London Gatwick (LGW)
Monarch Airlines MON368
Return Departure Time: 14:40
Return Arrival Time: 06:50

I'm quite happy with the outbound dates. I know I'll leave on the 25th and arrive on the 25th. However, I am having a complete mental block when it comes to the inbound dates.

Now everything I've read regarding my flights says that "all times are local times", but that would mean I'm either leaving Grenada on the 31st August or arriving in London on the 2nd September?!!!

My calculations (which could be wrong), would say that it's nigh on impossible to leave Grenada on the 1st September at 14.40 and arrive in London at 06.50 on the 1st September. Would someone please, please, please put me out of my misery as I feel very stupid and don't want to waste money buying a train ticket for the wrong day! :(

Why don't the flight times say when you actually leave? I'd really like the confused smiley back now!

You leave Grenada at 14.40 on one day and arrive in London at 06.50 the next, overnight flights are pretty much standard from that part of the world.

but that doesn't work out...Grenada is 5 hours behind the UK, so would be leaving at 9:40am UK time...which would imply that the flight will take 21 hours...which unless it's stopping somewhere for a long time, it won't.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Those return flight times sound right to me leaving at 1440 Greneda time (1940 UK time) and arriving London 0650 Uk time (02/09) giving a flight time of 11hrs 10mins, though I'd expect the flight to be approx 30-60mins early arriving with a favourable jetstream.

So I'd be leaving on the 31st August then?
Or leaving on the 1st and arriving on the 2nd?

This is why the world of aviation works and plans everything operationally in UTC (Universal Time Coordination) or GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) or Z (Zulu time) rather than in local time. Its stops confusion like this.

Grenada is 5 hours behind so when the OP leaves at 14.40 it will already be 19.40 in the UK ;)

Oh gosh, this is so confusing! I can remember going to Australia on a few occasions and there was a clear indication on the booking confirmation that the departure and arrival dates for one journey were on different days. I guess I was just used to that so didn't think too much about the Grenada one. It's so confusing!
