Double Glazing - cost effective?

I would have thought in this day and age there would be a system in place to repair a shot unit, even in situ, dry out internal void, vacum/argon fill, then reseal?
Maybe it's time to have regs where there is a valve built in to frame to offer repair to misting problems, afterall, it aint rocket science knocking up sealed units!!
There have been firms claiming repair techniques, but it appears they are not succesful.
The problem is that taking out(carefully) the sealed DG units and refitting them after preparing the surfaces is the major part of the cost. If you had to find the leak, reseal and then evacuate the moist air, it would cost more than a new unit I suspect.
I have had experience of trying to dry out mega-expensive optical/electronic assemblies and it is a major job.0 -

Interesting, I didn't know repairs had been attempted, I suppose another issues will be keeping frame integrity if glazing unit is successfully removed!
I'll be looking into replacing windows at side of house (4) before this winter, wooden frames have seen better days. I'll give company that did my front windows a shout, been installed ten year now with no problems........thankfully!!!0 -
All these maintenance free sealed for life items are just a huge landfill waiting to happen. A more worrying trend is low income people have no option to patch and mend.
A lot of stuff I replace these days are just rubber seals perishing,
as opposed to anything actually wrong.
If they want to regulate, they should make things more repairable.0
