HELP i have had my car impounded and need to sort the logbook

I was pulled over on thursday and had my car impounded due to 'No Insurance'
This matter has been solved with my insurance company and they are going to pay the funds to return my car.
Sounds perfect, WRONG!!!

I bought the car in april and do not have the logbook - i have the new keeper supplement only.
I went to the police station earlier today and they will not accept the new keeper supplement.

If i send off for the logbook by the time i get it back my car will be crushed!!!

Somebody mentionned something about going to the DVLA office and they might be able to do something.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Who did you buy the car off?

Did they send off their bit of the logbook when you bought the car?

If not then they still own the car technically don't they?
  • it was bought from my cousin who assured me he has sent it
  • Go to the DVLA ofice, pay the £25 and, fingers crossed, your shiney new log book will drop through the door a few days later. They say the usual 7-10 working days, but it usually takes about 3-4.
  • thanks mate. is it not possible for them to do it there and then? maybe for an extra fee or something?
  • I don't think so, but it would be worth asking. They may be able to provide written confirmation that you've applied at least.
  • yeah. i hope so.

Thanks for your help ur a life saver
  • Just a thought, but you were pulled for no insurance, which you have, and they are retaining the car because you cannot prove ownership? You CAN insure a car you aren't the registered keeper of. Provided you have complied with the minimum requirements of the RTA, I can't see how they can justify not releasing it. Might be worth having a word with a more senior officer than the desk plod?

I think a replacement logbook is free if you have the New Keeper's slip.

But £25 is probably the least of your worries.

Fill in a V62 form before you go to save time.

Is the DVLA aware of the change of ownership? Or is this a case of the infallible DVLA losing more mail?

New Keepers supplement is valid for 2 months, after that a new doc must be requested (£25).

Is your slip dated? Plod cannot insist on a reg doc if the new keepers sup is in date. If its good enough for the DVLA (who remember are the Gods of all things motoring/setting their own rules/Laws ) then it is good enough for all the departments below the DVLA. This includes the Judiciary, Home Office and Prime Minister amongst us lesser mortals.

Got to ask, who the hell are you insured with? Why are they offering to pay these charges (which to me shows you are guilty of the offence and thus lining yourself up for prosecution) rather than simply giving you a letter to indemnify that they would cover you for any incident in the time period in question?

Was this simply a case of the car not being on the database?
  • yeah that is it just wasn't on the database and it was outside hours for the copper to contact the company so he took it upon himself to take my car :/
It is out of date, the person i bought the car off did send it but the fantastic organisation at the DVLA hasnt sorted it
