A 3G SIM should be the same as the one in a mobile. If you haven't downloaded/installed the drivers, then it won't work, so try it. What does it say against the device in Device Manager? Have you tried reinstalling the existing drivers, which may simply have corrupted?
Nothing that you have said so far indicates a hardware failure.

Any sim with internet access 'should' work. But I'd only use it to go to say the google home page to reduce the amount of data used.

Did the laptop come from Orange or from a dealer ? If it's a dealer it's they're problem to sort rather than Orange's.

No no it came from Orange themselves not Carphone Warehouse or anyone like that :) it came as part of a package with the SIM card and 3GB of usage p/c/m. Ill tell him to try his phones SIM we have something like 500MB free usage of a weekend with our mobile phones, so it shouldnt even cost him!! :) Thanks for the help, will wait for him to come home, try downloading the drivers which it is trying to do now while he is in work but it needs the net to do it, and then if that doesnt work, Ill tell him to try his SIM! :) Orange said there were no network faults or anything like that but a SIM card doesnt take much to break! :)

Download the drivers onto the machine you are using to post with, copy to a flash drive, plug into the laptop, install them..

Noooo the only reason he cant get online at the mo is cause he is in work, and he isn't allowed onto their wireless network (its also security enabled so he couldnt go on it even if he wanted to!), so he has to wait to get home to get onto our wireless :) If his wireless wont connect then we will do it that way!! :)

Another simple check to do is to put the sim card into a mobile and try accessing the Internet, that way you can 100% rule out a sim fault. It doesn't seem like one but it wouldn't hurt to check.
Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug). ;)

The SIM is a special "data" sim apparently according to the people we have spoken to at Orange today and so that wont work, the only way to test it would be to get another laptop like the one we have and another data SIM like the one we have...! We tried what you said, but nothign happened, but we found out today it wouldnt because of the different kinds of SIMs.
