o2 cooling off period?

I recently came to the end of my iphone contract with O2. I was on the £35 a month tariff with the iPhone 3g.
About a week or so ago, I rang up O2 and asked them to cancel that contract as I wished to upgrade to a different handset (the HTC desire).
I've had the Desire for a day now and I'm already pretty unhappy with the battery performance. I knew it was bad since I had read reviews before I ordered it but I didn't think it would be as abysmal as it is... It's a shame because in almost every other respect, it's a great phone. Anyway, does anyone know whether I am still in a position to ask O2 to cancel my order? I think I would rather go for the new iPhone when it comes out but I'm worried about having started a contract. Since I ordered my contract over the phone, does this mean I have a 14 day cooling off period like with other phone ordered goods or does this not apply to mobile contracts?
Thanks,
Matt
