Hello im currently paying for up to 8mb broadband and my phone line is about 1-2mb but i am only getting 200-300 kbps speed ever. Theres no change. Is there a legal limit that they must provide me with and is there anything i can do to make them speed up my connection.
ps. its with Sky

david - can you post your line stats and how you've got everything connected up (phone, router, sky box, etc ??) - could do with some more info to work with, otherwise we're stabbing in the dark a bit......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

The speed of your line is dependent on a couple of main points:
1-The age & condition of the phone drop cable running from the master socket to the PSTN Telephone exchange)
2-The line distance as it is ran to your home.
In order to see what speed your line can handle, use the link below:
http://www.btwholesale.com/pages/static/Community/Broadband_Community/Coverage/ADSL_Availibility_Checker.html#
That will tell you what braodband speed your line can handle.
Also, the is no legal limit of speed that a ISP must provide you with due to the limitations above, nor is the much you can do to improve your speed.0 -
The OFCOM definition of broadband is I believe 128Kbps :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Yeah i have tryed that but i thought maybe there was a legal speed they had to provide you with.
My set up is 1 sky+ HD box with filter and 1 phone connected via filter and my router connected via filter.

Thats my current speed.

Your router does not have a filter on it-it's the phones that need to be filtered! Plug the filter into the socket, then the phone into the phone side and the router into the ADSL side. I assume this is what you meant?
Are you running the tests with your router plugged into your BT test socket (which is behind the BT master socket faceplate), and using ethernet not wireless? This method will eliminate any issues with your internal wiring.
Have you tried swapping out the filters for known good ones in turn? ADSL filters (especially the cheap and nasty ones supplied free by ISP's ) can and do go bad.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

This is how mine is set up & is the best way I've found for stability.0 -

whereas mine has filter into master socket, router off that and from the phone side I have a 2-way splitter, one side for phone and the other has another filter with the sky box into that (so the sky box is double-filtered.
However, that downstream 60-odd dB attenuation is going to be the limiting factor for the OP....follow the wiring tutorial here to ensure you're minimising any losses within your property:-

I have always been happy with Sky BB until recently. I was upgraded to "Unlimited" as I kept going over my limit. Following the upgrade my BB was running noticeably slower.
I emailed Sky detailing my problems. They phoned me and have now "made some adjustments on the line". It's now back to normal so I'm very happy with the service.0
