Do you have a pre-amp or amp between the turntable and laptop. Does the laptop have a line-in sound input?

You will need a software package something like Audacity to make the recordings.

Sorry just read your original post. Phono to USB is not very common, although I have seen turntables with a USB conector but they are very expensive. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
this has a preamp built-in (which you don't really need if you use your existing amp)

Does you laptop not have a line-in, just a microphone input?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Many Thanks.Hi Robin I have been following threads similar to this for a little while because up in my attic ar LPs and singles I would dream of putting on my pc and subsequently onto CD. To be honest my reason for this is a couple of weeks advertised in the Mail was an ION turntable that connects to any pc you then record your Lps/singles as per any other recording.......... The downside is that it's a relatively new idea and it costs up to £119 inc delivery. If you care to go to search and type in ION you will see the responses which I received and may help your cause:beer:

Forget USB - this is what you need?

The problem with one of those is that the OP doesn't appear to have a line-in, if that is the case, an amplified signal plugged into the microphone socket will cause distortion, and is probably not good for the laptop.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Not the way that I read it. Sockets - Headphone, 3.5mm IN & OUT. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
You added a comma
I read it as 2 ports only (headphone 3.5 in & out), which I assumed was microphone, and headphone (which is all I have on mine)
You may be right, we'll just have to wait for the OP to clarify.. just didn't want him to damage his microphone socket with an amplified input.
The other possibility (if he doesn't have line in) is using one of the Pinnacle Dazzle usb inputs, designed for video and audio, but much cheaper (about £30)Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Agreed
