Blackberry Bold 9700 Cracked Screen without Insurance

Hi there, seeking some advice.

My girlfriend dropped her blackberry last night and the screen is apparently now cracked. She says that the "outside" (I'm presuming the plastic cover in front of the lcd) isn't cracked but the actual lcd screen appears to be.

She's had the phone about a month on a 24 month contract (Don't worry, I've already had a proper rant!) but we're just trying to ascertain what her options are.

It appears Orange have some sort of emergency cover scheme? Is this right and is it the best way to go?

Any help would be fantastic.

Cheers, Michael.

Cheers for that. Definitely a cheaper option. I haven't actually seen the handset yet so don't know the extent of the damage, but I would imagine that it would only require a new LCD. Does doing so void any contract agreements etc with orange?

Was also wondering what the procedure is for repairs anyway. If she sent it into orange saying it "just happened" or whatever, would they consider it then send it back if they didn't believe her?

    Cheers.

It may void any manufacturers warranty with Blackberry, just FYI. Orange won't repair it free of charge unless you can prove a fault with the phone caused the crack, for example overheating. I've managed to help a customer get a cracked screen repaired for free through carphone before as the phone was dangerously overheating, even while switched off. (she was actually wearing oven gloves when she bought it in!)

Typically, cracked screens don't "just happen" and most likely they are caused by physical duress so I think you've got no luck using that reasoning. Sorry. :(

Usually a screen won't crack for no reason and I've heard no reports of it happening on the 9700, if you claimed it cracked by itself and upon inspection the handset was found to have been damanged Orange would charge you the full price of the handset, better to replace the screen using the guide above and then take out Orange Care to cover yourself in the future
  • Yeah it's my phone in question and was just wondering if anyone could help with the following.

It's a blackberry bold 9700 and I don't have insurance. I've had the phone for a month and dropped it the other night. The outside of the phone is fine, but the inner screen or lcd is cracked right down the middle, one half is white the other is black.

I've just charged the phone with my sim card in it and the phone actually seems to work. I can type in numbers, call people, recieve calls and I'm still getting notifications for facebook etc because I recognise the sounds. I just can't see anything.

Basically, I was just wondering what the best options were. Should I get a screen from ebay and let my boyfriend try and fix it? Or does Orange let you buy another blackberry at a reduced price? Or finally, should I give it to Orange/an outside company to try and repair?

Thanks so much (I know it was stupid of me not to get insurance and will do in the future!)

If you have household contents insurance, it's possible that you may be covered (subject to any excess) without realising it.

Dunno whether I'd bother with that, chances are, it'll push your premiums up ridiculously high. Orange will most likely send it onto RIM and they will charge in excess of £100 for the repair.

Doing it yourself or by a non authorised repairer could void your warranty, as the phone is so new I'd probably get the damage assessed by Orange and fork out for the official repair.

But if she signed up for Insurance today and I fixed it, surely if it was to stop working in future (or more likely get damaged, haha) it would be replaced under the terms of the insurance and not the warranty? And if this isn't true, would it not be viable to claim a new phone without actually having to send the other one in anyway (through loss or by saying it was completely shattered for example).

Just seems a bit excessive to pay someone else to do a task that could easily be done yourself.

    Or have I missed something?

    Ta, Michael.

Insurance generally doesn't cover you for warranty faults, just your usual loss, theft and accidental damage so no, I doubt it.

Maybe it depends on the indiviudual insurance policy but my bank wouldn't cover it and neither would CPW's policy.

Orange would replace it, but its a high tier device and it'd be £170
