Wood Flooring VS carpet

Hi, I'm looking to try and find where I can get some really reasonable wood (not laminate) flooring. We saw some really nice stuff in Wickes but it was £44 a pack and i would need about 11 packs of it. My other half wants carpet but i'd set my heart on having the wood. Unfortunately the original floorboards in the house are in a bit of a state to try and sand etc and also there is a drop between the kitchen and the lounge so the wood flooring would make this drop hardly noticable. Any tips/advice would be appreciated, thanks.

    - I hate carpets, especially in bathrooms
    - search this forum for wood flooring
    - search ebay for engineered wood

I'd go for wood flooring any time. Bedroom floor is sanded back original 140year old floor, varnished, complete with nail marks, gouges etc. I adore it.

Have a textured laminate in kitchen/dining which I'm happy with for the price. If I had floorboards downstairs though I'd be sanding those back.

    Carpets rule for living areas.

Wood is cold, noisy, slippy, can look dusty very quick and no good for pets or kids as clumbsy as mine.

Real wood isn't cold, laminate is. Our last house had laminate in living and dining rooms and it was freezing cold on foot in the winter, the house we are in now has oak parquet throughout the down stairs and it's incredibly warm on foot. I love it and have no intention of spoiling it with carpet. I'd go for proper wood everytime, even with 3 cats it's much easier to clean than carpet

while installing a new floor in your home, choosing between wood flooring and carpet flooring can be a difficult task. Both of these flooring offer considerable advantages. However, depending on your specific needs, one type of flooring may prove superior. Carpet is much cheaper than wood flooring but that doesn't mean it is less effective than wood. Wood is hard and resistant to water damage and stains. It is very easy to keep clean and free of allergens, especially when compared to carpet, wood flooring has some disadvantages as well, it is vulnerable to scratches, While Carpets are available in plenty with different colors and styles from which we can select of our desire..As you can see, there are many good and bad features of both wood and carpet as flooring materials. In the end, your final choice will depend on which advantages you prefer, and which disadvantages you find the least problematic.

I've got wood floors with carpets on.

I detest laminate. It's cold, noisy and, usually, nasty.
  • I'd agree with the positive comments about wood flooring, it's much nicer than carpet. If you buy the packs (or get it from a wood flooring merchant) go for the tongue and groove stuff - that cuts down on any draughts from under the floor and means the room is warmer.

I agree go for wood. I can't wait to rip our carpets up, we have parquet underneath which when sanded and resealed will look fantastic and be so much cleaner.
