Urgent Basic Techie Help Needed

We are currently having financial problems and in trying to save money, I am having to consider giving up Sky. We are currently paying £61 a month for basic+sky sports+multiroom+hd. What I need to know is if I were to get a cheap 'Freeview' box, could I run it off of the existing sky dish, or would I need to have a roof aerial fitted ? Any advice would be very much appreciated...

Freeview runs through an aerial so your Sky dish is no use for that. Freesat on the other hand will use your Sky dish. Also consider that when you cancel your existing boxes will revert to FreeSatFromSky boxes and will receive all the Free to Air channels as well as Free to View (assuming you have the new white Sky Cards in the boxes).0

Thankyou for your help. I have a Sky HD box, would that work with Freesat or would I have to revert to a standard box ? Also, would I be able to use Freesat in the bedroom where I currently pay for multiroom ?0

yes no reason Sky hd wouldn't work without paying for it0

yes no reason Sky hd wouldn't work without paying for it, you would jsut get basic channels but still be able to use the recorsing function etc
After cancelling the Sky subscription you would be able to use the box and receive the FTA and FTV channels.
You will not be able to use the recording features with no subscription to Sky.0 -
Hi, I agree with the advise from jem 16 , you will get all free channels, you will NOT be able to use the record functions and will will also lose access to all the previous recordings made from your subscription so if their is anything you want to keep back it up to DVD before changing.0

A Sky box won't receive any Freesat channels. Freesat is a different platform, the channel line up is similar but not identical, Without a sub it will receive the Sky FTA channels, and no HD.
If you want HD and PVR facilities (Sky+ equivalent) then you need to bu a Freesat PVR such as the Humax Foxsat HDR, which is a straight swap using your existing dish and twin feed from the LNB.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Without a sub it will receive the Sky FTA channels, and no HD.
This is not accurate.
As the OP has a current Sky sub any cancellation will leave the box capable of receiving all FTA and FTV channels. This includes BBC HD, ITV HD, Luxe HD and Channel 4 HD. Channel 5 HD will be available in July.0
