I've just got back from Ikea in Milton Keynes with my 9 yr old DD and my mum... DD wanted a hot dog (advertised with chips and a soft drink for £1.50) (I know... I know.... it's our own fault for buying a hot dog)... DD doesn't drink fizzy drinks (doesn't like them) and asked for water instead. Assistant behind the counter asked if she wanted tap water or bottled. DD asked for tap water, assistant said "oh that's okay then" and put 60p on the till. When I questioned whether it was legal to charge for tap water or not, assistant said that they charge 60p for the empty cup, not the water and that it was perfectly legal. Bottles water would have cost a pound on top.
Is this correct? Shouldn't they advertise it as hot dog, chips and empty cup?
#Surely they give you a cup for your drink included with the hot dog and drink anyway? The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

It's places with a music licence in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
(Bye law added when rave culture was at it's height and they were worried about ecky heads overheating). It is a bye law in some other places too.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

No theres nothing to stop companies from charging for tap water, some place charge and some dont, but they do have bills to pay so you cant blame them for charging for it
But surely they'd still have to pay those bills even if they refuse to hand out any tap water so why not just give it free and send away happier customers?0 -
I know a glass of water's free in the cafe at Edinburgh Ikea, but I've never stopped at the hotdog stall, so I don't know whether they charge there or not
seems odd that you'd pay in one part of the store & not in the other, I must ask next time I'm there
I'd definitely not be happy to be paying extra0 -
Its now a mandatory condition that a place serving alcohol must ensure customers have access to free drinking water0

I charge for tap water in my cafe because I also sell bottled water - why should I give it away for free because theyre too tight to pay 50p for a bottle of the stuff?I don't know if I'm getting better or just used to the pain.
