0870, 0845. 0800 numbers.

It seems very unclear as to whether you are charged for these numbers or whether they come out of your free minutes. Different people have said different things when I have asked. Why should they charge for free numbers? BT mobile said they charge for 0800. I believe that this is changing but I dont know when.
Can anyone add any information please?

The only network that allows you to call them out of your inclusive minutes is O2. All other network charge to call them. All Payg Networks charge to call them. Charges vary network to network.

Some networks allow you to call certain charity/help line 0800 numbers FREE .EG Childline.

I think when you dial an 0800 number a quick voice message informs you if you are going to be charged for that call. That's been my experience anyway....

BTmobile charge for all 08xx numbers not just 0800. If they dropped the charge it would increase their business greatly but at a cost which they have obviously calculated as not profitable.

There was an Ofcom consultation earlier on this year about this and the outcome was that the rates for 08/09 NGNs (non-geographical numbers) should be displayed with the same prominance as geographicals (01/02).

However, it seems that this is not always the case. See this thread on Say no to 0870! about it.
