I need a token present for the actual birthday itself (next Thurs). We're all going off on a weekend away on Jersey (expensive), as a celebration on Friday, so flowers are pointless.
She doesn't eat much these days, so doesn't want to go out for a meal (and anyway, we'll be eating in restaurants for the following 3 days).
She's at the stage where she is giving away all her ornaments & nik-naks, so a keepsake won't do.
Can't get into a bath anymore, and has loads of nice shower gels/talc/body lotion. She'll complain if I buy perfume, as can get it cheaper on Jersey.
She doesn't read books, doesn't own (nor want) a DVD player. She is an avid Sky Sports watcher.
I can't let the day go by without any present at all.
PLEASE HELP !!!

What about a shawl for the cold evenings or a throw for when watching tv. Elderly folk are always cold. What about a nice family photo put in a frame.0

My mum is 74 and I bought her an iPod. She loves it. She listens to both music and eBooks on it and has bought a speaker docking station for it as well so can use it to play stuff when she's around the house. What goes around comes around.....I hope!0

Nice ideas guys, but neither grabs me I'm afraid (she wouldn't use an iPod at all, thought I was loony, wanting one for xmas).
Any more?I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -

There are lots of things you could buy, but only you know what she would like. Slippers, chocolates, Bottle of sherry or what ever she likes, earings, necklace, personal alarm, torch, cross stitch
picture, digital photo frame to replace all the others:)0 -

escortg3, I know only I will know what she likes. But I'm out of ideas, looking for inspiration, hoping someone will post a suggestion that will make me go ..."YES !! THAT's what I'll buy " :jI try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -
What about a very nice version of something you use every day? Hairbrush? Shampoo? Kettle?
Or maybe book her to get her hair done ahead of going off for the weekend?0 -
could you give us an idea of what she does like instead of what she doesnt?
does she like music? - thinking CD
which sports does she watch? - thinking tickets for a sports to watch something live instead of on TV - voucher/tickets in a card
is there some sort of experience she has said about wanting to do? - plenty of older people do sky diving etc with the thoughts of now or never - get a voucher for a red letter day etc
something silly like a chocolate boardgame - http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/chocolate-scrabble/index.html
just something totally random http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/twilight-umbrellas/index.html
a teddybear hottie - http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/hot-bear/index.html
will keep on thinkingDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
It was Mums 80th two weeks ago...someone in the family got her a book which shows the headlines and reports from the newspapers on the day she was born...it also shows the product adverts from the newspapers too...interesting reading....its alll nicely bound...not sure where they got it but presumeably it can be googled....Me I got a canvass print of her cat...she loved it0

A hair appointment sounds lovely. Surely age is no barrier to enjoy being pampered. What about some comfortable shoes? I have no idea what sort of shoes are comfortable for an elderly lady, but surely a nice pair will last her a while and she would be able to use them daily so won't be some ornament or other cluttering up her life. Marks and spencer?!0

How about a hanging basket? Or a dressing gown? Or a new quilt cover? Or a new quilt and pillows? Or a new nightie? Or a weekend bag? Or a handbag? Or a subscription to a newspaper or magazine - that way she'd have something arriving every day/week that she'd look forward to. A hair-do sounds good, too.0
