The protein level is the key,so it does not need to be expensive ,cheap with good protein levels, unless of course you are loaded and money to BURN ,on burns

What is the protein level of burns,if your dog is sat on your lap all day it does not need high protein ,just a balaced ,vitamin enriched food

Becles do you mind having meat and animal derivitives in your dog food,do you care what meat is in it , i sure your dog does not.Human food has preservatives in it .The poster wanted a good economical dog food, not an expensive one,he did not mention preservatives or numbers ,we are dealing with dogs here ,not humans,he probably has working dogs ,looking at his avatar, they will thrive on Dr Johns

I'm a dog trainer, and I find it very interesting when owners come to me and say my dog is HYPER' - when I ask what it's fed on, 9/10 they will say Beta or supermarkets own label or one of the other labels normally available in the supermarkets.

I can not stress enough the importance of experimentation with dog foods to find one which really suits your dog - if they aren't eating it, if they f@rt a lot, they produce lots of huge poos, or if they are just hyper, it's often because of the food - change that, and you'll have a different dog.

What do I feed mine on? My Springer does nicely on Autarky (no VAT because it's designated for working dogs) and my elderly collie x springer has Burns. Each has just on a cup full a day and keep nice and slim, and each dog produces a good firm poo twice a day.

Just as we are what we eat, so are our dogs!
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Well, we use James Wellbeloved. It is the only food our dog can tollorate. She has a VERY sensative stomach. It is a dried food, you can add a little water if you wish. As regards cost, i would say it is on a par with others.
If you go to the james wellbeloved website, i'm sure you can get freebie samples. ( I am not a sales person or have anything to do with the company in any way)

    Hth,

Sure if your dog is elderly, and requires that little bit of extra attention to maintain health be selective,FIND WHAT SUITS YOUR DOG ,as cheaply as possible,if it gives problems change ,most dogs will thrive on a simply balanced diet ,some are sensitive ,like humans ,if you want to continue to keep them then you have to discover what upsets them ,but it might be Burns or it might be Dr Johns, both will give you healthy dogs

Burns works out under £2 per week for a medium sized dog. a 10kg dog (eg. cocker spaniel) will need 100g per day, and a 15kg bag costs around £32.

It costs approx £35 for a 15kg bag but to do a fair comparison with other foods you need to work out how much your dog weighs and the volume of food eaten per day.

Burns recommend giving your dog approx 10g of food per kg of dog a day, so for example a border collie (15kg) would eat 150g of food which costs roughly 35p a day.

And no, I'm not in anyway assocaited with Burns or any other dog food company :)

edit: How much does the Dr Johns food work out to feed the same sized dog?
