it's so simplistic to claim it's the law of supply and demand.
May be simple ... and correct

jvrmac - hope it all works out for you and you get to enjoy that holiday.
i've had TEACHERS tell me kids can learn more on a good holiday than they do during the respective time at school!

Holiday companies have to pay their overheads and staff 52 weeks a year and this will include the very quiet weeks of term time. So they need to charge more during peak time to allow for the lack of trade during term time. That's just business, they still have to pay the bills when there aren't the customers.

Unfortunately that's how it is. I have 2 children in secondary school and it's a pain paying the extra, but I'm happy to do so as it doesn't disrupt their education. When they have had the odd day off being ill - it can take a while for them to catch up; and with their GCSE exams starting as early as year 9 it's not worth taking them out. It's great to be on holiday but a real pain for them to catch up.

Children being taken out of school for holidays has been happening for years - I used to go for 2 weeks every year whilst at school and I left school 15 years ago. It never harmed me I got good qualifications and a good job. I think it should be parents discretion.

The OP doesn't say she has disregarded the terms of her OH's employment contract. She apparently had no inkling at all that term-time holidays would be a problem for her DH (surely, unless it is a change of policy, that would have been made clear from the outset of the job).

I'm afraid you're wrong on this; the OP has said,

"As for my DH, he hasn't yet asked at school for his holidays but it does state in his contract hols to be taken outside of term time. "

so not only has she booked an expensive holiday without sorting out the annual leave, she's actually booked for a time which is specifically not allowed by his contract.

Thanks for all the replies, firstly when my kids started school the policy was the standard 10 days at the discretion of the School, however as from Sept 2010, there is a new legislation which is being introduced which means no holidays will be authorised, this was apparently introduced by the old government and is something the new government has endorsed and is proceeding ahead with.
The School issued a newsletter advising that from Sept a new holiday policy will be introduced, apparently details of what the policy is will be sent out in Sept. I am assured by the school that this is national and will affect all schools.

As for my DH, he hasn't yet asked at school for his holidays but it does state in his contract hols to be taken outside of term time. However his old boss, who retired earlier this year used to go on holidays out of term time every year for up to 3 weeks, also there are other non teaching staff who have taken unpaid leave when taking holidays in term time.

I don't want my DH to lose his job over it.

I am a school Governor too, and I have never heard of this new policy. DirectGov makes no reference to it, and a quick google brings up no imminent changes. Were you told what legislation it was? I would be interested to know.

well, that is clearly for you to form a judgement on (although it appears you have already done so). on the other hand, maybe you will, or won't, still be rolling on the floor laughing when you compare it with a week learning in a uk school...
