Best basic mobile to take to South Africa?
My niece just rang to say people are already being 'relieved' of their mobiles and cameras in Johannesburg so to bring a cheap mobile.
I want to get something basic and small (put in pocket) but with good and audible ringtone, long battery life and totally dependable and reliable. Don't need a camera or music player, we are talking phone calls and texts and a good signal and easy to use.
I am going to use it with a local SIM so must be unlocked. Thanks for your advice.

You might want to try for those Nokia's going for 1p if they are still around. Actually its really £9.99 for the handset that includes a £10 topup voucher. Get the phone unlocked for £5-£10 down a market stall and your good to go. I can't say it will meet all your requirements you've listed, but its certainly cheap if you're worried about it being "relieved".0
