so tv's only last 3 yrs nowadays,

I'll stick with my crt, had it over 5yrs already.

what about the sale of goods act? thought that the item sold had to be fit for purpose, surely not lasting 2 yrs makes it not fit.

As said its all dependant on price paid 266 quid is very cheap for a 32 inch tv so no chances will it be anything less than reasonable for it to last 3 years.

Ive got an old 32" sony trinitron its lovely Tv set brilliant picture. I can't afford a high def Tv package so no point really in having a high def TV. It cost me £30 complete with stand bargin it must be at least 10 years old though. You have to spend ££££ to get a decent flat screen, all these no name ones don't last long.

Well of you did persist you would be looking at a partial refund of about 100 fluid but thats only of the report is in your favour which I'm guessing will cost more than 100 in the first place some places (bit you should get it back of its in your favour)

So its up to you of you want to persist.

The fact of the purchaser being a pensioner is irrelevant; mentioning it (too often) just gets people's backs up, and diverts attention away from the real problem.

The TV that was purchased would have been in excess of £300 with VAT added. I have no doubt that TV's are designed to last longer than three years. I purchased a Mirai 32 inch LCD over three years ago. It was nearer £400 but came with a 3 year guarantee. It is still going strong.

Friend of mine just purchased a 32 inch LCD Tevion from Aldi for £279. It looks good and came with a 3 year guarantee.

If the TV has a design fault, as you suspect, then surely it would be worth paying for an engineers report and insisting on your right to have the TV replaced.

You could try quoting the EU 2 year warranty/fit for purpose condition (sure google with provide the correct name!) but as I understand it, it wasn't in fact integrated into UK law and thus they can refuse to honour it. Some people in the past have had success with this. Failing that either consider it a lesson learned or take a gamble and pay for a report hoping that it sides with you.
