Black/White plates on 1987 classic car

Yes, I know its not allowed but realistically, will I :-

1. Get pulled over by the Police
2. Fail the MOT.

Got another car with the logo on the number plate (also not allowed) and never had a problem with police/mot. You see so many people with strange fonts/dodgy spacing these days anyway.

Both! The other one should fail it's MOT with non-standard plates. Your call...

A colleague of mine ran an '86 D reg Mini with black and white plates.. She got away with it for a couple of months but she's back on proper ones now. I don't think she got fined, just one of those tickets where you have to fix the problem and take it to an MoT station.

A lot depends on the mood of the copper on the day. Problem is they will use it as an excuse to stop you and then go to town on the car, tyre checking, lights etc. Do you want to run that risk?

    £60 fine too I believe.

I think the black and white/silver plates look a bit silly on more modern kit. Just my opinion after 30 years of owning classics.

The black/white plates are so obvious you are bound to attract the attention of the police, sooner or later, and any MOT tester worth their salt would fail the car.

What kind of 1987 car is a classic motor anyway?

Surely the point of classic motors is to keep/restore 'em to their original state. No 1987 car would have been supplied with black and white plates originally (I think they changed early 1970s).

My first car was a 1971 Beetle - that would have normally been supplied with black and white plates, but it'd been specified with reflective ones.

There is a heated debate in the Classic Car community over what constitutes a 'classic car'. The modern relective plates were first introduced in 1967, but were optional. Only cars made before 1st January 1973 can legally use black and white (or silver) number plates.

Yep- you will fail the M.o.T, and you may get pulled by the cops- I got nailed with a £30 fine for illegal spacing of the numerals.

Mate fitted a towbar to his car as an excuse to mis-space the characters, £30 fine.

Silly idea. If you do get stopped and ticketed you will get an MS60 conviction which will make getting insurance very difficult for the next 5 years.
