I've had a look at the choices of accommodation my son has just applied for tonight - and some of them supply bedding/linens, others have 'bedding packs' available to purchase for silly money. Some of the kitchens in some of the halls of residence we looked at during open days were dismal - not alot of room at all, others are quite large with lots of storage and are more like an open plan common room. Have you looked at the accommodations he has applied for? Warwick's lists are quite good and detailed.

Check if they provide a microwave - if they don't and you can pick up a relatively cheap one, he'll probably be the most popular person in the flat! :D

But seriously, by far the most useful things for a student:

    * Alarm clock (even though he might never use it)
    * Wash bag for keeping shower stuff (I wouldn't leave anything up for grabs in the shower - don't know who's using it!)
    * Check if they have a laundrette or washing machine in the flat - a clothes horse would be good if they have the latter
    * Also agree about the recognisable cutlery / pots / pans
    * A UV pen to mark his valuables - sad but true, some people will 'borrow' just about anything and never give it back

2 hallmates of mne had similar cutlery. She was always going through his cutlery because he'd taken hers instead of his - which was always left around in the kitchen.

It was the biggest bane of my time in halls of residence. That and the fact people didn't wash up afterwards.

We had a dishwasher, but living with 6 boys it did not seem any different.

They had a rota to load and unload it, bless:p

Or do what I do, and keep everything locked in cupboards.

Its useful at the end of the year when theres plates that have been there weeks and I haven't got one bit of washing to do! :)

See, where I live, we're all jointly responsible for the communal areas, so if one dirty, selfish person leaves the place in a state, we ALL have to pay for it to be cleaned when it fails the inspection. I do lock my things away though.

It's the same where I was. originally, one of the people said that the two who choose not to use the kitchen that often, shouldn't have to help keep the kicthen tidy - something I disagree with they. They chose not to use the kitchen that often.

  • i've just moved out of halls (3 weeks ago!)
    my recomendations...

    - saucepans etc - cheap as you can and dont' expect them back - they'll get stolen or wrecked!
    - cutlery - distinguishable (eg blue handles or something) - everyone has cheap plain silver cutlery and it's so confusing
    - extension leads - although in my room i was fine but many are not
    - hangers!! - and lots!
    - first aid stuff - so usefull - plasters, ibuprofen, antispectic, etc
    - stock him up with all his wash stuff
    - dressing gown if he's sharing a shower
    - flip flops again is sharing a shower! (i'd say vital lol) - never showered without them in the 8m i lived there
    - slippers
    - bedding - agree with matress protector - primark is fine!
    - sationary - everything he needs!
    - photos :)
    - external hard drive...usefull for uni work back up
    - own printer - uni printers are terrible
    - don't forget that it does get cold in the first term so don't forget scarf/gloves/coat etc!
    - one of the most valuable things i took was an over the door hanger from lakeland limitted....usefull for coat/dressing gown and towels
    - clothes horse - although his laundrette hopefully won't be as bad as ours
    - washing tablets not powder - a lot easier to take to the laundrette
    - they say a door stop but we found shoes work fine lol
    - proper shoes - he may find if he goes to clubs that they don't like trainers!
    - id - he'll need it in freshers for regestering etc
    - black pens - he'll get to hate form filling in!
    - for his cfs he may be able to record lectures but i'd check with the uni's student support
    - alarm clock - lovely 9am lecures!
    - lamp - he might have one but a spare one is so usefull
