  • If it helps, I made a list of all our 'fixed' costs, mortgage, electric, etc.
Then have a good think about all the extra bills that come in, car tax, repairs (if you can estimate that!) birthdays, etc, over the year and add 20%.
Divide that by 12 and add to your monthly fixed costs. Any money I have left I divide by 4 and I don't take any more out than that once a week. I'm still trying to avoid the 'millionaires weekend' at the start of every month but still get caught out towards the end especially as we got paid before the May Bank Hol!

As I said, it's a work in progress!! Can't think of any other tips when you have ravenous teenagers, but God Bless Asda! Good Luck!

Whaddya know, Hells Teeth, I'm quoting myself!!!

In my defense, can I just say I had a bad feeling about giving advice here. That reply was only how I see things and worry constantly!

Please take it or leave anything I've said on the subject. Of course we all get caught between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. It's not cast in stone, but it helps me. I'm very sorry if it sounded as patronising to you as it read back to me! OMG.

    Licking her wings,

What the h*ll are you berating yourself for TF? Your advice as ever was excellent and rooted in common sense. :T
You did not sound patronising in the slightest and we look forward to your next missive!
I am always amazed and slightly over-awed at the comprehensive and in-depth advice given by some people on this thrread. I know I haven't got such expert advice to impart and my posts only relate to how it is for me. We all give what we can and you give lots.:A

Well, hun, my advice is as far from expert as from here to the Moon!
I really try, like everyone else on here to be 'real'. I'm not in the least bit 'real' with my friends or family, so this is the only place I can, let off steam, berate the horrible people I owe, or just comment on how hard this is sometimes.
Thank you, it's good to know the gibberish typed in this wee room makes sense to someone!!!

just wanted to say thanks for the advice and agree with everyone that I will be saving up for things when this is finally over.

I am a bit nervous going into this with all the phone calls and I have a credit card with the bank I have my mortgage with, so I don't think I'll get a great geal when my current one ends...

In some respects I don't know why I am worrying about the budget because I have no spare cash now.....and I do appreciate the advice about being honest and telling people I can't afford things, but all my friends have really good jobs and don't always understand my situation, but this is for a limited period of time.

I have my interview with payplan evening so anymore advice much appreciated.

    thanks again

Not sure if it helps, but my mortgage is with the same company is my small OD, and as far as they're concerned are totally separate.

Regards friends. All of mine know my position, and understand to a certain extent. My work colleagues are the same and both will 'sub' me a night out on a rare occasion. Tonight's and last weeks travesties of England games being examples. It may not help as I end up owing money, but I can always say no. And I am never under any pressure to say yes.

You don't lose face by admitting your situation. You soon discover your real friends in any case.

    Night all!

  • I forgot to mention a good tip a friend gave me for cheap cocktails. Buy one of those plastic jars of peaches in juice, drain it then mush it up with a hand blender. Put the lid back on and stick it in the freezer for an hour until it looks like slush puppy(!). Put a spoonful in each cocktail glass then top it up with chilled Cava (£3.99 from Tesco).
6 really posh looking drinks for under a fiver. And they are yummy!!!

Hope everyone is having a good weekend in this lovely weather. At least sitting in the garden is free!

    Hi,

Just wanted to comment regarding the mortgage. Like Ianmark I have a cc, od, 2xloans and secured loan  with my mortgage company but they have all been kept quite seperate for the last year and I have checked with the bank at various times just to see what rates are and as an existing cutomer have not had an issue with the possibility of changing.

If any payments would have been missed on the mortgage or secured loan I think it may be a different situation but this isn't the case.

thanks for the reply, does that mean I can keep my cc and overdaft out of the DMP? The advice I am getting is that all creditors need to be included.

No, everything has to be included. And that'll also mean setting up a new bank account with a creditor with whom you have no ties... when I get a chance I'll post a link listing the companies that are linked to each other too.
