Train Ticket fine, very worried :(

I would imagine a fine would be just some sort of standard fare. The worst case scenerio is you could get done for attempted fruad but I really doubt it will come to that.0

i think it's a minimum £20 fine - it is on southeastern anyway0

I now have recieved a prosecution letter asking for my details, and optionally my side of the story. The problem is that im 18, in full time education, unemployed and simply unable to pay a large fine. I didnt actually board any trains so im not even sure i can be prosecuted?
What is the best thing i can say in my letter to lower the cost of my presumably undecided fine? Are they sympethetic?
Also, how much am i looking at here because i have no idea..
Basically you've committed an offence under the Railways Act which can be tried in court and end up on your record. You may end up with a criminal record at the end of this - the fine will be the least of your worries as the offence will have to be declared on all job applications and will show up on a CRB.0 -

Wow, youve now made me even more worried.. I can be a criminal for this? There's me thinking criminals are murderers or rapists, but no im in the same category.
I will update this when i get a reply, if anyone is interested to learn of my punishment.
Out of curiousity, what would happen if i completely ignored the letter and the reminders?0 -
Criminals are also thieves.
If you ignore it, you get even more lovely details to put on your Disclosure forms.
Hope you weren't planning on becoming a teacher.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

I don't know if you will get a criminal record for this but what makes you think stealing isn't a crime?
I mean, it's not really any different from going into a shop for milk, deciding you only have enough money for a chocolate bar and so swapping the price tags. Would you consider that a crime?0 -

I wouldn't worry too much about what others say on here some are just very negative people.;)
Bottom line is you've admitted the offence which can only help you in the longrun.
What I'd do now is write to them admitting you were in the wrong and that you understand what you did was unacceptable. Do not under any circumstances ignore any letters as this will only make matters worse and could even land you up in court.
All you can do then is wait to see what happens from there. My guess is that you'll probably get a fixed fine and a stern warning but it'll certainly stop you from doing it again.

I totally agree. Some of the responses above are absolutely worst case scenario - there are far more people who don't even bother trying to pay anything!
Don't sit and worry yourself about it, be pro-active, contact them, do your best to state your case. And don't let anyone else petrify you into ignoring and hoping it will go away - it won't, it will make matters worse.0 -
Ok, ive edited it.. Now please can i have some advice.Approach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful! For Caroline my Goddess.0
