Connecting Laptop to Tv via HDMI

Hi there, wondered if some will be able to help please. We have a Samsung laptop model NP R510 which has Windows Vista on it and our Tv is a Toshiba XV55. I have a dell inspiron laptop and a toshiba t.v i changed the input to 'hdmi' then i plugged the hdmi cable into both and a box popped up and asked if i wanted to watch on one or the other or both screens , i made my choice and hey presto.... sorted ..:beer:
