Connecting Laptop to Tv via HDMI

Hi there, wondered if some will be able to help please.

We have a Samsung laptop model NP R510 which has Windows Vista on it and our Tv is a Toshiba XV55.

We would like to connect the laptop to the tv to watch things like BBC Iplayer but cant work out how to do it.

The laptop has a HDMI socket on it and in the book that came with the TV it says just to plug a HDMI cable into the Laptop and then connect the other end to the TV HDMI socket.

We did this and nothing was coming through on the tv at all. Then we read on the internet that we should go into the Control Panel and Display and set it to have Extend the Desktop on two monitors which we did. This gave us the picture that we were using for our desktop showing on the tv but nothing else. The sounds were coming out of the tv though.

Then we tried changing the settings so that the tv was the primary monitor and all the icons came up on the tv along with the mouse pointer but when we clicked on I-Player it started playing only on the laptop and not on the tv. It was quite hard also to get the Laptop back as primary monitor again and we were a bit afraid we would mess it up and not be able to use the lap top.

In the book with the tv it says for acceptable PC signal formats see Aceptable video or PC signals through HDMI terminal, then it gives a table which is too big to type it all out in here but it has the first column headed Format and the second column headed Resolution. We managed to change the resolution on the second montor setting to something near what it gives in the table but on the Laptop settings it only gives options of 1280 by 800, 1280 by 768, 1280 by 720, 1280 by 600, 1024 by 768, and 800 by 600.

Does anyone know what we are doing wrong please? I am not really too technical minded and am getting in such a muddle, so if there is an easy way of describing what to do it would be appreciated.

The bit about the PC resolutions you should ignore. This is to do with plugging your laptop into your TV with a VGA cable not HDMI.

    Try the following:-

    1. Plug in the cables
    2. Put the TV on the correct channel (it may not auto-switch).
    3. On your laptop, right click on the desktop and see if you have "Graphics Options".
    4. Select "Output To.." and then choose TV
    5. Right click on your volume icon in your taskbar and select "Playback Devices"
    6. Select HDMI

This should output the video and audio to your TV.

Have you tried to move your mouse to the right (or left) edge of your laptop screen and then further? The mouse pointer should have appeared on your TV. If this works you can simply drag'n'drop anything from your laptop screen onto your TV screen.

"Extend the Desktop" does exactly what it says, extending the desktop ;)

This is really way off the OP's topic, but why does MSE's auto-censor not like the !!! part of their user name???

I can't think of any rude or offensive words that contain that sequence of letters and number, but perhaps I've had too sheltered an upbringing...

You may also have a Fn button which you can press simultaneously with the F7 key (or a function key with LED written in a box and a / followed by a square with an arrow pointing to the right).

Press it once to get it to show on tv, again to return to laptop

Fn key + the F4 key will scroll through the options. Make sure your TV is set to the correct input mode.

    Next time, try the manual
