Taking food abroard?

Hi

We are going away in a couple of weeks to tenerife and its self catering. We have been told since booking that there isn't a supermarket nearby and so I thought we could take some food with us in our luggage as things are a bit tight. We would not be able to eat out everyday!

I have seen programmes on tv where people get stopped and searched and fined when food is found in their luggage, but cant seen to find any info on what is allowed and what isn't.

Does anyone know what the rules are or where I can find out. Our travel agent was useless.

Hope someone out there can help. x

Where in Tenerife are you staying? I found it hard to believe that there won't be a supermercado nearby. If its Playa de las Americas (including San Eugene, Adeje), Los Cristianos then you'll be nearish to several.

Banned foods are usually meat and fish. I have taken teabags and Marmite with me.

Make sure you try Honey Rum (Ron Miel) when you're there.

    .

Indeed, and if you are that far away from shops, you will need a hire car.

You could ask on the Holidaytruths forum, someone may live or have visited where you are going.
I think the fines people incur are when they are coming or going in or out of Australia and NZ.

Just another thought: If it is apartments then surely no one would go if there wasn't food easily available?

You've been watching Nothing to Declare, haven't you. Pesky Australians.

Food can pass freely within EU Member States - Canary Islands included.

You are right 'Nothing to Declare' has a lot to answer for!!!!!

We are going just outside Las Americas and have been advised its very steep. so wasn't keen on lugging a weeks shopping up and down a hill with 2 kids. I thought a bag of rice and some sauces in the suitcase would make a quick and easy meal. That sort of thing.

Thanks to all for your comments

Sounds like the Adeje end of things then. You won't be miles from shops, just take a few things, then make several visits to the shops as and when.

Are you hiring a car that would make things easier?

Why not look on Google Maps and use Street View to have a look at where you're staying and see what's around?
