Using my phone in Canada and the US

Hi Guys,
I have a Nokia 8800 (it was an upgrade from O2 so it is unlocked). I have to go to the States and Canada for a month. I was wondering will my phone work out there with a US pay as you go sim card? Or do I have to use a UK one. Is there something that I need to do to the phone to make it work, or just buy and pop in a Canadian and US sim??
Thanks

Yes the Nokia 8800 is a tri-band phone so it will work in the US and Canada. Switching between bands is automatic so you should just be able to use a local GSM simcard.0
