I shall be using it for the usual stuff - office work, bit of video. It is just that I want to get a decent size one, easy on the eye, that will last a while and do justice to the wonderful new computer.

    I got a Samsung 226BW (22")... A while ago? Can't have been 3 years, surely!

Anyway awesome, excellent buy. It's worth putting good money into the monitor because they usually last me for about 3 PC's, and anyway they're the most important thing really since they affect about everything else. Not somewhere to cut corners.

That said, can't see myself wanting anything bigger than 22". As it is the web browser is windowed to probably 20" (square) because it's easier to browse that way. Gaming and movies are definitely better with widescreen tho.

Take your time researching a good screen, it's a long term investment. It is a pain to research since you can't just look at the performance charts like with cpus/graphics, but try to get tips to narrow down to some good models in your price range then read plenty articles. Worth it because a good monitor makes a big difference. Watch the specs, 24" monitors often have the same res as a 22" so you just have bigger pixels.

A 22" widescreen will need a resolution of 1680x1050, if the graphics card can't handle that, then you'll have wasted money :(
This is true enough and certainly worth checking but even the onboard Intel graphics on the EEEpc B202 (basically netbook spec) with the latest drivers which I use as a home server handles the 1920x1080 native res of my cheapo but still impressive 24" widescreen.
