5 out of 6 of the IE icons are shortvuts only and don't work. The 6th gets me back to the funny noise and flashing mouse icon.

I have a new icon on the desktop and if I click thi sI go online and get the pop up page again where it has an extra task bar with headings like 'remove adware popups' and spam protection, it looks official but I wonder if it is a virus.

From that page I can type in an address and have gone to look for ad aware or spybot but I get a red error message from McAffee that tells me I have a PUP which ends with USDR6/_oo_

I 'm going to look into that and see what it is. Incidentally, I can't remove this extra task bar at all.

sorry, I forgot to answer the rest. I have nothing of any importance on the laptop as it is mainly used by the children. Yes it is one of the inspirion 1300s.

    1. Power the computer on.
    1. When the Dell screen appears, press and hold the <Ctrl> key on the keyboard, press the <F11> key, then release them both at the same time.
The Starting Symantec|Dell Recovery Environment screen appears.
    1. Note.gif
NOTE:Press the keys one time only. If you press them more than once, a keyboard error occurs, and the above steps have to be repeated.
    1. When the End User License Agreement appears, click the Accept button or press the <Enter> key to indicate that you accept the End User License Agreement.
The Symantec Recovery Disk window appears.
    2. If you want to restore your computer to a backup you created, click Recover My Computer and perform the following steps:
      1. In the Select Recovery Point window, select the backup you want to restore to and click Recover My Computer.
      2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the recovery process.
    • If you want to restore your computer to the original Dell configuration, click Recover My Computer to Original Dell Configuration and perform the following steps:
      1. In the Recover My Computer Wizard window, click Yes or press the <Tab> key, and press <Enter>.
A second Recover My Computer Wizard dialog box appears.
      2. Click Yes or press the <Tab> key, and press <Enter> to start the recovery process.
        The Ghost32 window appears.
Once the process begins, it usually takes only 8 to 10 minutes to complete. When the restore is complete, the system restarts. Your software is now as it was when you first received your computer.

OK, I'm just getting a copy of Firefox now.

It looks like that extra task bar is the problem as everytime I try and navigate away from it I get the funny noise and it all stops again.

I would then change the childrens user accounts from ADMIN to limited when you set them back up, stop programs getting installed, password protect the main Admin account

Browntoa I didn't get the options you outline, but I did get a Dell restore option, so have gone for that.

It's working through it all now.
