lost internet explorer

I'm not techie but will explain this as best I can. My son has been using a Dell laptop and had a pop up about protecting your pC which he showed me, I assumed it was one of those virus scams where they get you to download something, and you get infected but the pop up wouldn't go away and we had to restart the machine.

To make sure we ran a McAfee virus scan and that was clear. Since all that we have completely lost Internet explorer, if you click on any IE link the screen just flashes as though it is trying to load, but nothing happens. Even trying to open an existing web page from a link doesn't work.

I have rebooted and that's about as far as my knowledge goes, any suggestions?

congratulations. I've spent months trying to get rid of IE ;)

(system restore would be the first port of call for this problem)

    Thanks.

I have ticked the 'system restore box' and clicked 'apply' but got no prompt to restart PC, but have turned it off anyway and am just about to go and restart it now.

OK rebooted and still no IE. I tried calling up Mcaffee again as it was the last thing I knew that worked and clicked to go to help and appeared to get online. It told me that it was unavailable but as it did that my PC started making funny noises and the mouse icon flickered. It is deificult to describe the noise, but rather like someone clicking a mouse several hundred times, or maybe having a disc stuck in a CD player (there is no disc in DVD).

Am going to try rebooting in safe mode now and see what happens.

sounds like some sort of pop up repeating itself, could it be you have a conflict?
