Many moons ago when my son had Salmonella (diagnosed with a sample) the Doctors contacted Environmental Health, they visited us at homeand asked loads of questions about what he had eaten the previous 24hrs because it's usually something eaten 24hrs before the symptoms appear.
He started with vomiting the first day, very high temperature and sick next day (diagnosed as a water infection by a locum Doctor) and the runs followed the next day. All this lasted approx two weeks before he started to feel better, no food at first just diahoralite drinks (may be spelled wrong), these replace sugar and salts (I think) and keep you rehydrated.
They never found out what caused my sons but thought it could have been an egg infected with Salmonella, apparently out of a dozen eggs only one may be affected. But they did tell us any foodstuff can be affected by poor food hygiene eg people not washing hands before handling food.

In order to diagnose fp you would need to provide a faecal sample to be tested. This would show an organism which would then indicate an onset period of anywhere between 30 mins and 11 days depending on the organism which would then enable you to pinpoint the cause.

Salmonella is usually between 24 -72 hours after consuming the organism, campylobacter is 2 -11 days after consumption and stapy is usually 30 mins to 6 hours.. there are many different organisms and without the type it is impossible to predict what caused your illness.

The EH Dept would only be interested if you have actually got a formal fp sample with an organism that fits to the type of food that you purchased.

Food poisoning and stomach bugs are two different things.

Food poisoning is caused by bacteria realising a chemical into the food that give your poisoning hence the name. This usally happens when A food is allowed to stand at room temp for too long then brought back up to temp, It kills the bacteria but leaves the poison behind prime example being with rice. Symptoms are pretty much within 4 to 5 hours max(from what i understand)

A food Bug is usally from undercooked food such as salmonella from chicken typical time taken for bacteria/virus to build up to making you sick usually around 24 hours

This is incorrect. Although the EH department will be notified if something comes up with a sample, they also act on complaints where they think it is necessary.

Please do not put people off complaining about poor standards of hygiene in food businesses.

Yup, I had Samonela once a few years back. Awful, the worst I have ever experienced, maybe the only time in my life I have literally been bed bound (apart from the squit sprint to the bog every 3 mins, almost made camp there).

I gave a sample (ha ha, great experience) and it went for testing.

I heard nothing else from the doctor but about 2 days later I had a big questionnare from EH with a convering letter

"I have been informed you are carrying the samonella bug, please fill out and return the enclosed asap" type thing.

The questionnare asks all about where and when you bought and ate food.

I must have continued to give regular samples for about 2 Months but never did get the "all clear". I felt okay so gave up sending the samples off.

    Good luck
