Deary me, you're a paranoid and bitter lot!

Thanks for your response 1984 returns. The reason I'd like to know the answer to my question is because I was shortlisted, but I know people who sent off their applications yesterday and wondered how it would affect them. Obviously I'd rather they were out of the running, but OH mentioned they may be able to complain to someone.

No use moaning an employer will employ who he wants not what someone says he should have. many go through the open application fiasco just to comply with some stupid rules, like it or lump it that's life.

Schools, companies, loads of places are required to advertise a vacancy even if the management already has someone unofficially lined up. So they go through the motions and advertise it with no intention of giving the job to anyone other than the person they have in mind.

Have to agree with this - the councils and civil service/MOD are the worst for it! What makes me mad is although it's law for them to advertise it, it's such a waste of applicants time filling out a form and attending interviews for a job they'll never get...

Well the closing date is the date & they should of got their applications in before.

Yes they could cause a fuss but it won't achieve anything other than drain money from a taxpayer funded organisation.

Anyone genuinely interested would of applied before or rung up to check if CVs were still being accepted.

Whoever these people are that might want to complain need to grow up. The right person for the job done the above.

The applicants have no one to "blame" but themselves.

Perhaps they want people who can time manage and don't leave things until the last minute.....

They could have still easily reviewed CV's received later and added to the shortlist, however, those coming in so late they might doubt the commitment.

I have noticed an increasing number of employers adding the rider "this vacancy may close early if we receive the required number of applications" to their job adverts.

I think it is due to the huge number of applications they are receivng at the moment, there is so much competition for jobs. :(

It depends how they are doing the shortlisting.

If it is "we will see the top ten candidates" they may be on a stciky wicket

If it is "we will see everyone who meets criteria x, y and z" then of course they should go ahead, get organised and set up interviews with people meeting those criteria.

It definitely goes on! I recently saw a job advertised and know I could have done it (it had once been my job!) The manager advertising the post is someone I know very well so asked him 'is it worth me applying or is it spoken for?' He was very honest and told me 'no, not worth applying, the girl who is temping at the moment will get it'

What a waste of time, effort and money. Not to mention some people's hopes being raised when they get an interview. This was a local government post so we probably all paid for it in taxes of some kind!
