As we are an island I'm not sure why we need the biggest landforce in Europe.

If your department can get on happily without you for 6 months, why the bloody hell are they employing you in the first place. sort of sums up publc sector non jobs really.
They can't and sadly that is why the sabbatical will remain a dream for me. I don't have a non job - I am a teacher.0 -
you could shve billions off the prisons budget by treating prisoners like the scum criminal filth they are and not as "guests" in a 3* hotel. no need for tv's, computers, books, games, play stations, hair dressers, gardens, gardners, cooks, chefs, cleaners, electricity, psychologists, bingo nights, gym equipment etc and so on.
when it is dark, you cant see. when its day, you can. food should be some homogenous slop served with a vitamin (purely to keep medical costs down). the prisoner should NEVER leave their cell until the day they are released. Each cell could hold up to 15 prisoners at least. you put an exercise bike in each cell which is linked to a generator. the bike must be peddled 24 hours a day by rota. the prisons can them sell this electricity to pay for the prisoners food.
probably cut down on reoffending as well.0 -
If they ever put white horse in charge of prisons crime would almost cease because they would be too terrified:beer:0

I thought you had a sabbatical every year.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
I've said this before.
We legalise drugs and prostitution. The government can make money from the sale of drugs, and the prostitutes will have to learn to pay tax on their earnings like the rest of us.
Over time the policing costs will be reduced too.0 -

Thailand still illegal....so I guess no tax.
I can't link as I can't remember which paper but there is a pilot scheme somewhere that is giving heroin free and crime in the area is massively down...shoplifting, robbery etc.
Maybe with the sex industry it's because the prices would have to go up. By the time the workers have allowed for VAT, tax and NI on their income.......prices would have to rise.0 -

I wish. I am using about a third to a half of my holidays to prepare for next year. Short hours are a real myth. On Tuesday I was in school from 8am to 8.30pm. This is not unusual at this end of term (summer term ends in two weeks in Scotland). Most teachers work around 50 hours a week.
I tend to work from home more than most because of a back injury. It is more comfortable to work at home. The back injury was sustained at school when I was seriously assaulted by a pupil. I was off work for 8 months and have been in pain since January 2007. It is not a cushy job.0
