lol They are actually quite good to work for, and it's definately been an eye opener...
Yeah I bet it has! I should imagine that they are OK to work for and I would imagine it would be fairly easy for you to shine there as a designer.
The customer I had that came in on Saturday was recommended a set of appliances by the designer (Neff cooking, Elica extractor, Hotpoint FF and washer dryer!) and then told by the Magnet designer to purchase them elsewhere as Magnet wouldn't be able to compete! Bless 'em!0 -

DOH!
Obviously one of the better salepeople then lol Could you imagine them working for an independent. Some people just don't get margins, discounts and "special deals" :PIf it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Yep. Is it that they haven't been trained properly, just don't care or what?
I just feel sorry for the customers as how do they know if they are talking to someone that does know what they are talking about or not.0 -
Couldn't agree more. That said, the training you get here is quite decent and at least you are tasked in your probabtion period. That said, it doesn't matter how much training you get, some people just aren't cut out for it. Some people still see designing a kitchen as "putting boxes in a room" and I guess that's the case with all different kitchen design companies. It probably makes the divide between kitchen designers and kitchen salespeople even greater. The way I see it, I shouldn't have to sell the kitchen, the design should do that for me...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

on the subject of designs, I was most impressed with my local independent, who gave us some great idea's, came round to the house, measured up etc. All the other big name co.s we went to were not very helpful or creative at all in their designs.
Unfortunately, the independents german kitchen came to £15K, with 4.5K for corian worktops on top of that:eek:0 -

If you liked what the independent specialist did and you feel they will do a good job for you, or at least better than one of the nationals. Then my advice would be - go back to the independent specialist and be honest with the designer give them your budget, tell them areas where you are prepared to compromise, let them suggest ways that will bring the kitchen into your budget. I am sure they would supply you with the best kitchen they could for your budget and it will still be better than the nationals could do.
If you are serious about having a decent kitchen rather than a cheap one, which it sounds like you are merely by mentioning Corian, then sit down and have a proper conversation with the designer, lay all your cards on the table as it were, and be open to their suggestions. If they are anything like us then they can do kitchens from £5,000 to £100,000, it just depends on what the customer's requirements are and their budget, and I am sure they would come up with a better kitchen for you than the national companies you have mentioned.
Good Luck0
