Aah he sounds lovely. I wouldn't get too worried about the last owner - I took on a rescue dog from someone directly and all I did was turn up at their house and walk out with the dog! To be honest, if you like or don't like someone when you meet them, there's not a lot more you can do to check them out really. At least that way you get to meet them, whereas if you give to a rescue centre you have no idea what happens. Personally, I'd want to check people out more, but if she is going through the mill right now, she's probably just doing her best. Hence the communications not being quite as urgent as you'd like.

I really fancy a Patterdale myself one day. I have owned Jacks in the past. All I can say is life as a terrier owner is never boring! They are very rewarding little dogs. At 7 months he is still young enough to adapt quickly and learn a lot. Just with terriers bear in mind they are quick learners. And they learn bad things just as quickly as good things - so be consistant, be firm, don't let him get away with any monkey business now (even though he's young/cute/funny/whatever) as you won't cure him of any bad habits later. Once something's there as a habit, it's there for life. They need to be kept busy busy busy with lots to think about. But then the rest of the time they'll just flake out on the sofa.

They think they are four foot tall and equal to anything; they love digging and disappearing down tiny holes and miniscule gaps in the fence and getting stuck; they are affectionate and great fun; they can be quite 'guarding' of their territory but that's not always a bad thing. They have a reputation for being snappy/nippy but I don't know why as all the terriers I've known have been lovely (just, as someone said, don't let kids go repeatedly poking them in the eye or anything). They love a toy they can 'kill' by shaking to death. Mine have all been fine with cats. (The rescue one had a problem with men that she never got over - friendly to kids and women, would growl at strange men if they came too near, and snap if they tried to touch her, but then there's no reason for strange men to touch her anyway! Once she'd met them a few times and realised they weren't going to axe-murder us all she was fine.)

They can be, um, 'strong willed' but if you've already got experience of dogs, you should be fine. I think they just wrap newbie owners round their little fingers :-) Just be more stubborn than them. Food is a huge motivator. They also have to see the 'point' of what they are doing.

They aren't cut out for obedience classes 'Pardon? sit down? Why? What's wrong with me just standing here? I'm being good. What's the problem with that? YOU sit YOUR bum down on this cold floor.' But when it comes to agility and stuff that is actually fun, they do really well. I've never had a problem with recall either.

Terriers are a weird mix of tough as old boots and soppy as babies.
