Shop refund policy- Can they refuse?

Can a shop refuse to refund an item ?
I purchased a present for a friend from the superdry store and it was not until I arrived home that the receipt advised me they do not offer refunds only exchanges.
The item did not fit so I took it back to the store. After a great deal of difficulty they agreed to refund the purchase.
Are they legally able to do this?

Unless the goods are faulty/not as described then no, you aren't entitled to a refund, most shops allow refunds but this is goodwill and not required by law.Lollapalooza01 wrote: »Can a shop refuse to refund an item ?

This is the reason I do most of my shopping on the 'net, then you have Distance Selling Regs to fall back on.If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.0 -
Yes, you only have a right to a refund on faulty or mis-described items. You do not even have a right of exchange. It it is up to you to ensure that the item you purchase is correct.0

Oh why oh why oh why can't we have a sticky about this???If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Because......... like so many of the things asked on this site there probably is a sticky and people don't read it !
Just the same as when they spend 10 minutes typing out a question to post here when 3 or 4 words into Google will answer the question in seconds.0 -

That's the same for most subjects though surely? If people don't ask questions on here and eventually the forum slowed to a stop then there wouldn't be a need for it. Do you want the forum to close? I for one prefer to ask on here.:A

I don't think I've ever read any of the stickies.
Much more entertaining to have a nice chat with the other MSE members!!

You are misunderstanding what I said.
Just take the somewhat contentious subject of TV licences. (Of which I have had a fair bit of experience and done a lot of research)
Every few days a new post appears about this subject, this is invariably followed by the same incorrect information from some others.
A simple search on this site will produce umpteen threads on this subject. Google will produce umpteen million ! The truth is already out there. To be honest, I rarely respond to these any more, I really don't understand what is so difficult about the "Search" function. In most cases it is a lot easier and quicker than typing out your particular query.
Another classic is broadband speeds, or running the aircon in your car, or being "ripped off" by the gas company, or the cheapest train fare to Wigan Pier, or parking tickets, or............., or......., and of course the good old Sale of Goods Act !0 -
...or the 'secret' 2 year EU law!0
