Im 19 and Living on my own...Benifits.

Hi guys, looking for some help of all the Knowledgeable forum members.

I am 19 and i am living on my own (well i share a flat with my mate) I was not kicked out or had any arguments with my parents, they wanted me to gain some Independence and helped me get my flat, i wanted to live in a safe environment and in a new building.

I have just finished my college course and i go to Uni in September.... i have a part time job at the local garden center i work to days a week, i found out that i was allowed to claim Job seekers allowance, now i am not in college?

Is there anything else i can claim to make my life easier.

I am finding that i have less and less money for myself with Bills, rent etc going out.

Thanks for any answers you may have.

As you're working part time you may be able to get some JSA but not the full amount. You can also apply for a 25% discount on Council Tax as you live alone. That is about the only thing i'm afraid.

You could see if you are eligible to claim LHA for the summer between your official college/Uni course dates (which is sometimes different from when term ends, check with your college). Go to the LHA direct website to gain an understanding of the LHA rate for your postcode for a room in a shared house and then go to the Entitled To website to see if you may be entitled to any LHA. Note the ET website doesn't work for students so it'll only apply when you are officially not a student.

Other than that, you should seek longer hours or a 2nd job.

OP does not live alone, so does not qualify for single person discount I believe?

    Summer job?
All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.

you're not actually "earning" that on JSA though. Besides if you quit your job voluntarily, you'd not be eligible for JSA anway.

Take the extra day at work, show you're keen, you might get more hours quicker than you think.

I'm not sure you are getting the hang of this 'independence' lark, bless you though for stating what many people feel (namely that it's not worth working when benefits pay similar sums for doing nothing).

Your work experience makes you more employable, giving you skills and experience, plus a glowing reference, that you can't get by sofa surfing at home.

Investing in your career is a lot more than just picking up a qualification expecting it to propel you into a job, as lots of graduates are finding out around now.

You will invariably need to work part time during your degree, again this current job will help you graduate with less debts, or even leapfrog into a better paying one after the end of the summer.

You don't earn on JSA! It is given to you.
