From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor's_degree#Scotland
An Honours degree (BA (Hons), awarded as an MA (Hons) by some universities) for arts and social sciences or BSc ((Hons) for sciences) is awarded for students who have completed four years at university — two years at sub-honours level, studying a variety of different subjects, and two years at honours level studying one subject in depth, usually including a dissertation in the final year. Honours degrees are further subdivided in classes. These are first class, upper second class (2:1), lower second class (2:2) and third class.
I assume if it only classes "honour years" then it will be year 3 & 4 marks that are taken into consideration. Work out the average marks for those two years and how many credits are above/below the 60% boundary.0 -
I've just finished a degree at a Scottish Uni, and it was third and fourth year marks only that were taken into consideration for the final classification. With an average of B1/2, you can expect a 2:1 - a rough guide we were given is, majority of marks A1-A3 = first, B1-B3 = 2:1, C1-C3 = 2:2 and D1-D3 = Third. It is thought that with one D, you could not then get a first, but it has happened - when the board sits they discuss cases like that between lecturers, and can use their discretion to a certain extent.0

P.S. Yes I do think she will have the 2:10

THanks guys, ive passed the info along to , unfortunately idnt think anythin ids helping at this point ,she will have to wait and see what happens next week , personally i think with an overall mark or around 58-59% they should really give her a 2:1 but we shall wait and see
thanks for all the help0 -
Isn't a 2.1 an average of 60%+?
The universities I've had experience of have the following classification system for honours degrees:
+70% First
+60% 2.1
+50% 2.2
+40% Third
I think you can get a 'Pass' degree with a lower average but not sure.
Though perhaps if they only take marks from the last year of a 4yr degree it is different?0 -

While an individual 2:1 mark = 60-69, a degree classification is usually calcuated using both proponderance and an average. So, students usually need to get so many marks within x class, as well as a stipulated percentage - which is usually 1% less than the classmark (ie. 59% or above for a 2:1). I've not heard of a classification system allowing an average of 3% below before.
Exam boards take various things into consideration when performance is borderline. In addition to mitigating circumstances, they may also consider the dissertation mark (though it sounds as though this has already been given due importance by being double weighted) and "exit velocity" (ie. if the student's performace really "took off" towards the end of the course).3-6 Month Emergency Fund #14: £9000 / £10,0000 -
thanks rosie , i was quite shocked myself that they were happy to accept 57% overall, i know she did better in her dissertation than on some of her individual subjects but not massively different , i believe was around 62% for her final mark on that. i think she has just been one of those students tha is always on the borderline lol0
