hi everyone,
i hope someone can help, i know this isnt really to do with money saving but im hope some students out there might know the answer lol. Firstly to let you guys know im asking on behalf of my cousin so i dnt know all the ins and outs of it
,she has called me in tears saying she has just got results from her honours year, and has just missed a 2:1 adn thinks she has now got a 2:2, heres the situation: she took 6 modules (dissertation counts as two of those) she got 60% for that and one other class (therefore has 3 b1's) her other 3 classes she recieved b2's all between 57.9% and 58.6%, she states her handbook says to recieve 2:1 majority of marks must be b1's with an overall mark of atleast 57%, now as far as i can see she has achieved the overalll % but has half marks at b1 instead of a majority, do you guys think she will be given a 2:1 ?????????
after reading this back i realise i know more about the situation than i thought lol, when i did my honours its was a straight get the required marks or not nothing tonhelp boarderline cases, so im hoping someone out there might be able to give some words to the wise :T

Erm.
She should realise her marks from her 2nd year would also count towards the overall mark?
My course is 2nd Year = 30%, 3rd Year = 70%. I think most unis are the same too?0 -
just wondering why 2nd year results would count ,shes in her 4th year ??????
i assumed it was just her 4th year resulys that counted, i only did my hounours year last year currently doin a masters, and to be honest im sure my honours degree was classified based on just my resulkts from that year ???? maybe im wrong but thats what i thought lol0 -

Because you didn't say she was on a 4 year course and the majority of courses are 3 years
What course and uni is she at?
(also, my course is 4 years but its only my 2nd and 4th years that count)0 -
ooopps sorry about that
she is at university of the west of scotland , and shes taking a business honours degree dnt know what degree it is exactly, just know its a business degree0 -
Ah Scottish!
Scottish Honour Degrees are 4 years, English are 3 years
I am looking on the website at the moment for the detailed course information but cannot find anything at the moment. There are a few Scottish students who do roam the boards who might have some more info about how it works in Scotland.
---
I do think though, in England, when students are on the border they look at first year results and if they are good they will bump the result up.0 -
i looked myself on the webiste, it just stated majority of marks at b1 and an overall average of 57%, i think the main point im unsure of is the majority , as she only has half marks at b1, and has an overall average above 57%..........hmmmmm i suppose its up to the uni0
-
It depends on how her specific degree programme works out her classification. For my 3 year degree the first year is worth 1/9th, the second year is worth 3/9th and the third is worth 5/9ths and in order to get a 2:1 you need over 60% overall.
Is she not given her classification alongside her marks?
Which university/couse?0 -
By overall average, it will mean the overall average achieved from all the years that contribute towards the degree. I am unsure which years they are or the weighting for each one. For my MComp degree (awaiting final results now) It was 1st = 0%, 2nd = 20%, 3rd = 40%, 4th = 40%.
I therefore assume the "majority of marks at b1" will be from all the contributing years.
What marks did she get in previous years, they will count.
If she already has her marks, she could ask her tutor what classification she has?0 -
apparently not , her results went up on an intranet system she will have to wait until the end of next week when they send out the letters. really just trying to calm her down at the moment
have looked into this abit more myself and it must be different in england than scotland, i looked at my old handbook (altho for a different scottish uni) and honours marks are only based on honours year grades.
i think she is focussing on the stipulation of MAJORITY of marks at b1, whereas hers are only half of her marks at b1 level but still achieving an overall marks of atleast 57%
as far as im aware shes been pretty consistent with half her marks being b1's and b2's throughout her academic career, altho thats just what i can remember from what shes told me0 -
The reason I asked about the course is that within universities the degree programmes can be assessed differently so my degree is assessed differently to other people I know within the same university doing a different degree - even in the same department.
Sorry I cannot help more, I know how horrible it is waiting for confirmation of these things - failed a module last year and it was horrible waiting to find out if I could continue. It may be best for her sanity to contact her year tutor and ask. My year tutor managed to put my mind at rest a few weeks before I got official confirmation.0
