Can I insist my insurance company does the repair?

I've tried looking for an idea of it's market value but it's seems to be anything from £5oo to £1100 depending on mileage & condition. I'll just have to wait and see. They haven't asked for info on mileage or condition and the assessor didn't ask for the key to check anything in the car or under the bonnet so I'll just have to patient! I was hoping that Saga might be one of the good guys in insurance but it sounds like I was being rather nieve! I've never in my 25 year driving history had to claim on my policy so it's all new to me!

I don't think so because you may have no clue about vehicle valuations, it's just so they have a 'rough estimation'

    This isn't universal amongst insurers.

Check the policy before guessing at the valuation - some insurers do use the figure you give in the event of a write off.

eg. This is how Swiftcover value your car for a write off payment:
We will not pay more than the lesser of the market value of the car at the time of the loss and the amount your car is insured for less any excesses. If you bought your car at a lower price than would normally be found in UK trade guides, we will reduce the Market value accordingly.

You could just make up a figure then? :)

    Pretty pointless suggestion.

As you can see with the swiftcover clause I quoted, you need to ensure the figure you give is at least the market value (or more!), and don't just give them your suggestion of a "rough estimation" - as posted, that could come back and bite you.

Make up a figure that is less than the market value, then you wouldn't be entitled to get the mv!

We are likely to award the policyholder the full retail value, even if he/she inadvertently under-estimated the value of the vehicle when filling in the proposal form or luckily bought the vehicle for less than it was worth. And we have seen exceptional cases where a vehicle’s value genuinely rose between the date it was bought and the date of the damage/theft.

Why would you tell them £800 if you paid £900
Regardless they pay out market value; for that car I wouldnt expect much over £700. Its a 13 year old clio afterall.

The extra £100 was for the rather smart radio/cd player which I rather stupidly didn't think I could include in the overall value?

If the radio/CD wasn't the manufacturer's standard issue, then you should have informed the insurer that the car was modified. There would have been a question when taking out the policy which asked if the car had any modifications.

OOps - didn't notice that! I've just been on Parkers and the dealer price for my car in good condition is £950 and my car has only done 80,000 miles which is well below the expected mileage for a car it's age so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that Saga are going to be fair with what they offer me!
