£126.84 monthly electricity bill!
Hi all,
Have just moved into a new flat, to which Npower supply the electricity. However my first MONTHLY bill was £126.84. Now, Im a reasonable man but to me that seems a tad high! There are two of us in the flat and we are only here at weekends and in the evenings. We have one small TV that we hardly use, a computer that gets similar treatment, an electric cooker and hobs that get daily use and an electric boiler.
Now I have zero knowledge with electrics, but Im guessing that maybe it could have something to do with the boiler system as everything else gets little usage. Heating is off (as its August) but hot water is on a timer on the Heatrae Sadia boiler. I have turned the immersion heater off at the fusebox alone.
Has anyone got any ideas as to this crazy bill? Meter readings are correct so something is using the power and I cant afford this every month! The Maplin reader things seem great, but as I say everything is pretty well controlled and there not a great deal of electrics within the flat itself.
Anyway, anyone with any experience who could hint at the problem is more than welcome to speculate!
Thanks

Something is definitely very wrong!!! We are a family of four, me at home with kids most days and ours aren't even half of that. Have a look and make sure there is no way anyone could have tapped into your supply.

P.S Just wondered if the previous tenants bill has carried over onto your. Worth checking.0 -
Wouldnt have thought so - its been done off the meter. Any other ideas?0

Can you post the actual figures off your bill?0

Hi,
Have you checked meter readings, is bill an estimate?
If so may be based on prevous tenants.
Try checking meter by switching everythng off, the a know load.

Yeah had a look over that and as much as I would like to get a Maplin gizmo Im really not convinced thats its any socketed product except for my boiler - but not even sure where the plug for that is
According to the bill I have used 1327 units in a month. Does that seem excessive? Its jumped from 74273 to 75600. The roundness of that final figure un-nerves me slightly...
How do electric meters work? Do they feed to Npower directly or do they just estimate from previous usage?0 -

Are you sure that they are actual readings and not estimated?

Electric meters simply measure the current flowing though them and display the figure in kWh. There is no direct connection to npower, either they read the meter or you provide them with a current reading.

I doubt if it possible for you to use 1327 units in a month(given your usage) even if you left your boiler on 24/7. They do have a thermostat and the losses are not that high.
Either your meter readings are wrong, estimated wrongly (probable) or a faulty meter.0 -
Take daily meter readings.
I'm using around 3 units (Kwh) per day and 3 Econ 7 units per day. So call it 6 units per day, so that'd be around 180 units per month. Small flat, hot water on,cooking, lights, computer etc. That's about £21 per month.Happy chappy0 -
Are there any dates on the bill? Did you take the reading of 74273 when you moved in? What type of meter do you have, if it's an old style dial meter could you or a meter reader have misread it?0

my monthly electric bill is just over £100 and i cant comprehend how we are using that compared to other people's electric bills.we have oil heating, dont have a tumble dryer. we have dishwasher ( used every other day) washing machine on twice a week. dont use immersion heater much either...5 tvs- not usually on at once tho.2 laptops and desktop, 4 plug in telephones and use around 3 funny shaped light bulbs that use little electric. although most of the tvs and videos etc are left on standby as i would have to set all the clocks on them every morning. im not sure what uses a lot of electric so .....desp. need to cut this bill tho.......0
