I had a NF7S v2.0 (the best one)
OK then I guess it was some sort of bug in an NF7S v2.0 that resulted in XP2500+ running at XP3200+ speeds by default? Close? If not I don't know. Not getting anything from the slug reference sorry.
It often seems to be the case that cheaper parts were the same silicon as the more expensive ones, just set to run at a different speed. E.g I had one of the early Core 2 Duo E6300's that I ran for a few years at something like a 60% overclock (it just about matched the "Extreme Edition" of the time which cost an arm and a leg) with no fancy cooling, no additional voltage.
You got it bang to rights, it was only the Rev2, I built about a dozen a month for 5 or so months until the word got out. O/C'ers were reading the net buying an NF7S, working hard to find / buy a Socket A Barton 'B' Thoughbred [(680) and wondering why they did not work.
What they did not understand was only the Rev2 had a BIOS coding mistake on the 5th bit that auto-enabled the FSB to run at 400MHz speed.
I even caught one customer trying to buy an overclocked complete system from me for big money, I had been forewarned that he was sent from one of my competitors to buy a rig they could disassemble to work out the ' how to '
- they were all built with an ATi AGP card O/C to x2 it's speed but that's another story !
- the reference I made to ' slug ' was just clue to give you a date of around 2001-2002 when CPU's were called slugs and there was in the context of the Barton, a big debate on the colour of the slug some green others purple - which one was the Dresden plant Germany [ overclockable ] chip ?
