2 year old HP laptop overheated. Now wont boot.

Our HP DV2000 laptop has finally broken.
It has been overheating and turning off for the last year or so.
And now it wont turn on.
HP recognise that there is a fault with some of these laptop models, however, my serial number seems to suggest it cannot get repaired for free.
Is there anything we can do to get this fixed?
Its 2 years old, but it has been playing up for the last 12 months.
We cant afford a new laptop, and not sure we could even afford repairs.
Cheers,

Google NVidia Defect and see if your model is likely to be affected by this fault.I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break

Thanks very much, Ive found this website
https://www.nvidiadefect.com
Which seems to tell me I can take my laptop back to Comet and ask for a full refund even after 2 years as it was defective from the beginning!
The forum is full of success stories (albeit rather difficult) so things are looking up a tad.
Thanks for the heads up

Couldn't remember the name of the website.
I was one of the success stories - got a full refund from Staples when the laptop was nearly 3 years old.
They'll talk you the whole way through the process and are absolutely brilliant. Staples even commended the quality of the report done on the laptop!I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break

Fantastic
Well done!!
Did you have to take them to small claims court?? or did they give in before hand?
Our issue is that MIL bought it for OH and we have no receipt or record of buying it. So i dont think were going to get far.♥ Blogger at Victoria's Vintage Blog ♥0 -

I didn't have a receipt either but before I started the letters, I rang the branch I bought it from and, knowing the price I paid, they looked up the model and provided me with the date I bought it.
It was an unusual laptop with a high spec so I ws lucky in that regard.
I didn't have to take them to court, they made me a lower offer based on the fact that I couldn't prove the price I paid for it. I had info that it is not a legal requirement for a shop to provide a receipt when you buy something and therefore cannot demand a receipt when a problem occurs. I said they couldn't prove I hadn't paid that price and so any offer they made would just be a figured plucked out of theair and I wanted my money back and got it.
It did take several months from start to finish, but you just have to hold your nerve, be patient, continue with the letters and follow the excellent advice on the forum.
If you need any additional support whilst you go through it, do feel free to pm me.

Thank you very much for your reply

Will have a hunt for some proof of purchase, and if none can be found, will try and contact Comet.
Bit tough though as we dont know the exact date or price paid! Just an approx 2 years ago, approx £700.
Worth a try though.
Cheers for all your help

Hi X-Princess-Vikki-X,
My name’s Matt and I’m from Comet.
It was disappointing to learn of the problems that you are experiencing with your Hewlett Packard laptop.
After discussing this matter with our multimedia department and seeking advice from the manufacturer, they have confirmed that some models within the DV2000 series are affected by the Nvidia defect, although this is dependent upon the exact model and product number of the laptop you currently have.
Although you have stated that the laptop is now out of the 24 month period for which HP extended the guarantee for this period could you please email me your personal details so that I can investigate this matter further for you, we can then see if we are able to find your purchase details at the same time.
If you could please send me an e-mail at the link below and include the serial number and product number of your laptop..

You will need to register a few details with us to be able to send your e-mail in.
Thanks

Don't hold your breath Vicky. I had the same problem with my HP, model dv9500 - which also is not on the list despite having the same graphic cards as those affected. I can't remember when mine started playing up but I have got in touch with Comet with the exact dates and tried this forum and all to no avail. Matt (comet representative) tries his best, bless him, but the rest of his dept hardly help ... i am gearing up for another attempt though so Comet watch out
