Actually, that isn't the case: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=CS40021&lc=1033
I would get on to them and demand a refund.
Thanks for this. I don't think I'll have a problem with a refund. The email states:
P.S. If for some reason you wish to cancel your subscription, McAfee can provide a full refund only if cancellation is within 60 days of this renewal notice.
To contact McAfee Customer Support, visit www.mcafeehelp.com and select your country or language. This message is being sent from: McAfee, Inc, McAfee Security S.a.r.l. (Europe), McAfee Co., Ltd. (Japan).

Keep the McAfee AV for this year because you've already paid for it and, as Macman has pointed out, they're very unlikely to refund you. Then next year after you've cancelled it, get either Avast AV or Microsoft Security Essentials.
Avira doesn't scan e-mails.
It's worth your while getting Malwarebytes now if you haven't already got it. It's free, highly recommended on MSE and will often find nasties which Anti Viruses miss.

You just need to remember to press the update button on it each time you want run a scan. A quick scan takes about 6 minutes.
Thank you. A lot of food for thought... and a couple of questions if I may *where's the rolls eyes smiley when you need one?- If Avira doesn't scan emails what can I use that does and that is compatible with Avira?
- If I need to download something else, won't all this take up the sort of memory that McAfee already uses?
- I was all set on Avira, but now I'm thinking maybe I should go with Microsoft Security Essentials - does this scan everything so that all I need extra is malwarebytes?
Sorry for all the questions. I'm massively grateful for the help and the links and advice are really helping me gain a bit of confidence in an alien world... not saying you're aliens or anything

McAfee and Nortan Anti-Virus are probbally THE most crappist, overhyped AV's out there today. And they are only where they are for forcing people to have it when they purchase PC's from PC World and Dell etc etc.
The two BEST (even better then McAfee and Nortan) AV's I have come across are AVG and Avast! They are both free, and probbally better then paid ones, they also use a lot less resources then MC and Nortan. Of course, if you like the free versions (note, they are not trails, they are simply... Free) then you could also upgrade to the "pro" version which is only like $10 a year or something like that. I'm sure everyone else here would agree with me.
CrapAfee yes it does what it says on the tin, Norton (unless there is another called Nortan I have not come across) is fine for most folks that are prepared to pay the £28.95 I paid for a 3 User license not as bad the knockers suggest. MSE is ok I have that on my Vista system, AVG is fine if you can spend time on this forum waiting for AlienRik or Browntoa to help you. I have not tried Avast for a while but used to be/is fine judging by experiences related here too. Kasperky is also fine ....same recommendations. Very important.
AVG since 7.5 (?) has become an ineffectual, bloated resource hog. 'nuff said.
Lol, its just more user-friendly, even to a poweruser. And for some odd reason, scans the HDD faster, WAY faster then AVG without hogging up all the resources, which is what I like about it. It also tells you the % it's at, and how many GB's its scanned.
So I take it AVG's gotten worse/r then?0 -
Try avast, turn on windows firewall, and spend your £50 on a backup solution. None of the limitations/annoyances of the other free ones, decent detection rate, and lighter on resources. Use malwarebytes to supplement it with occasional manual scans.!!

You can't use 'something else' as well. You can only have one AV program on your PC at one time, otherwise they will fight. Avira is fine, it just won't autoscan emails. So if you get a suspicious attachment with an email, just save it to the desktop and then scan it from there. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

i would agree with this generally, i use Avast and am more than happy with it, i also use Comodo firewall instead of windows firewall and would suggest that over windows firewall (in XP at least). and malwarebytes is a must
and buy a good external hard drive £50 will easily get you a 500gb back up drive http://www.ebuyer.com/product/189868 or http://www.ebuyer.com/product/194821 should be fine for a back up drive so you can do daily/weekly back ups of all yoru files incase you ever have problems and not just virus problems since hard drive failures are one of the most common faults a computer can haveDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
That's a great idea about the back-up of hard drive. I've had one loss of work when my last computer crashed and it wasn't pretty!
Thanks to everyone for their help and support... can't believe I've learned so much from this short thread. :T0 -
Backup with disk imaging software to recover from crashes. If you get a maxtor/seagate/western digital drive, you can download a free version of acronis trueimage for the drive manufacturers website to backup everything in one go, data, programs, settings.!!
