I use shredded paper. It's a good idea to try and keep the strawberries off the ground if you can. They'll be cleaner and less prone to rot and slug damage. Net them too if at all possible.

I have got hay under my strawberries - I asked on my local freecycle for two handfuls of straw and got given half a bag of hay that was leftover pet bedding...!
Otherwise - if you know anyone who keeps horses, or have stables nearby, go and ask them for a bit of straw!
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

A cereal bowl and lashings of cream (well that goes on top, sorry)

You can buy little strawberry "doormats"

but being MSE-ers we can make our own, don't we? (Left over weed suppressant material or hanging basket inners? old woolly jumpers? crushed up old peat pots? hessian sacks? cardboard? etc etc :D)

Straw can be bought from local farmers or equine suppliers.

My Dad used straw and it is good but very messy. I grow strawberries in the ground and I dont put anything down at all but do net them against birds.

I used straw for a few years, messy and annoying, as you are supposed to remove it all at the end of the season and burn it.
I planted a whole bed through weed fabric some years ago and it worked really well.

This year and subsequent years, I think I'll go with kays idea and use bits of cardboard round them, best for ease of use and you can pull them up easily to look underneath.

Field behind us used to grow strawberries through plastic, gave up after a while due to the plastic preventing them from getting chemicals down to kill the vine weevil. They stopped growing strawbs so guess where the weevils went. Took us years to get them under control. moral of tale, don't grow strawbs through plastic.

My BIL cuts holes in polysterene (out of packing) & plants them through the holes. If aleardy planted I suppose you could make "collars".
