What to put under strawberries

Dont' say straw! What other things do people use? I have no idea where to get straw and think it looks messy so can I put down plastic or foil under the berries?

    if they are in containers they should be fine! Paper shreddings from a paper shredder may work too if you want something to put under

    Mine are in the ground (and on the ground). I have propped them up with big stones but really need to put something down

    i tend to over lay the strawberries with the plant itself which then raises it off the ground.. :)
    God helps make my veggie patch grow. He provides everything I need.. It only fails if I do NOT do as He has told me!!

    Imagine if Christianity spread like swine flu... how much better the world would be!! God Bless!

    I use dried grass clippings. Free and plentiful. I don't know where people get straw either.

    I used shredded paper a few years ago. The strawberry patch was so white and bright, I am convinced it would have been visible from space!!
